One University of Alabama gymnast has already punched her ticket to Paris. Luisa Blanco will represent Team Colombia at the upcoming games.
Blanco was born in the United States and grew up in Dallas, Texas. However, her parents are from Colombia, and her Colombian heritage was always front and center growing up at home.
鈥淚 like to tell people that at home I was fully Colombian. I spoke Spanish. All the culture was there. My parents did a really great job of instilling that pride in me,鈥 Blanco said.
Blanco spent the last five seasons competing at Alabama. She鈥檚 earned multiple All-SEC and All-American honors and even won a national championship on the balance beam.
Blanco鈥檚 time in Tuscaloosa hasn鈥檛 been without its challenges. Just weeks after starting her career at UA, the COVID-19 pandemic ended her season. But it was these challenges that caused Blanco to step back and look at the bigger picture.
鈥淚 knew that there was something missing, and I didn't want to look back on my career and think, 鈥榃hat if?鈥 So that's when we pushed for the crazy dream. And here we are now,鈥 Blanco said.
After receiving dual citizenship, Blanco earned a spot on the Colombian gymnastics team in 2023. She excelled at the Pan American Games last fall, where she was able to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
鈥淚 honestly blacked out in the moment. I was like, 鈥楴o way. Like I got the score?鈥 I couldn't believe it. And honestly, I think I still can't believe it. It's a dream come true. I don't think I'll believe it 'till I'm on the plane actually heading to Paris,鈥 Blanco said.
Currently, Blanco continues to train in Tuscaloosa as she gets ready for the Olympic Games in Paris. She said her time as an Alabama gymnast will always be a part of her.
鈥淚 think everybody says it when they leave that they bleed crimson and I'm no different. I'm so thankful for the community that I've built here, my friends. And, you know, Alabama will always be a part of me, even though I'm Colombian, I'm American. I consider myself a part of this Alabama family and I'm so excited to be able to represent them on the big stage.
Luisa Blanco will be the sixth University of Alabama gymnast to compete at the Olympics.
