SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH
A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued to cover many counties in central and north Alabama through 11pm. A severe thunderstorm watch means we may get severe thunderstorm warnings.
The main threats with storms through the evening are hail, damaging winds, and frequent lightning. Keep an eye on the radar this evening, especially if you have outdoor plans.
IMPACT DAY: STRONG STORMS THURSDAY
Thursday will be an "Impact Day鈥 because some scattered storms move through the state in the afternoon and evening. We use the term 鈥淚mpact Day鈥 to describe weather that is inconvenient and could cause some disruption to your normal daily routine.
>> BE AWARE: Current weather alerts in your area
Impacts: We do not expect significant, widespread, or destructive severe storms, but some storms could briefly reach severe limits, producing locally damaging wind gusts over 60 mph and large hail through midnight.
Our primary concern with these storms will be the threat of large hail, possibly up to golf ball size. Hail of this size can damage property, including roofs and vehicles, as well as plants.
An unstable atmosphere, coupled with some colder air aloft, will support hail growth.
Some model guidance (shown here) suggests hailstones could be larger than golf balls in the most intense storms; however, this does not mean that all storms will produce that size hail.
Hail forms in the tallest part of a thunderstorm, but the nearer the freezing level is to the surface, the greater the chance of hail reaching the surface.
Timing: A batch of heavy storms will move south from Tennessee into northwestern over the next few hours. Those scattered storms will move southeast into the Birmingham area between 7 and 9 p.m. and they will be ending after midnight over southeast Alabama.
STAY WEATHER-AWARE
This will be the only real threat of rain or storms for the next seven to 10 days in Alabama.
