Homewood City Council holding public hearing for Brookwood Village
Homewood City Council is holding a public hearing Monday night on Brookwood Village.
Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Facility is looking to renovate and convert the old Belk department store that was located at the mall.
Brookwood Village was once a thriving mall, now it's abandoned. That could change soon as Andrews Sports Medicine hopes to develop on the property.
"We do have in front of us, two requests from Andrew Sports Medicine," Homewood City Councilor Jennifer Andress said. "The first is to do a survey of the property. They are asking to partition off just this section here, which is the Belk building, and then the second request is to approve their development plan."
If approved, the building that was once home to Belk will house a 135,000-square-foot medical development, including a surgical center.
Andress is the chair of the city council's planning and development committee. She said she's been hoping to develop this property since she ran for office.
"We're so proud of where we live and my neighbors deserve to have something that contributes to the neighborhood versus what has been the last several years," she said.

The abandoned mall has been a source of issues for the city council.
"We've had to be on the lookout for dumping that's taken place on the property," Andress said. "We had an incident last week with needles that were found on the property."
Andress said whether it's Andrews or another business, she hopes some development can happen on the property.
"I think it's really a positive thing that things are finally happening at least on one part of the property," she said. "I hear from folks, probably weekly on what's going on over at Brookwood. This is a really important piece of real estate. This is a nexus of several different communities."
Those residents will have an opportunity to voice their opinion on the proposed development at the public hearing on Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. at Homewood City Hall.
