Bessemer City Middle School students won the 2025 National Pacers' Bullying Prevention Contest. Students say speaking up is the first step in solving the problem.
鈥淎nything hurts and it can drive people to do awful things to themselves and to other people. Love people, respect people, and if you see something like this happening step up, tell someone in any way that you can,鈥� stated Bessemer City Middle School student Aaliyah Lewis.
The school went up against one thousand schools across the country to win the competition, and more than 90 students participated in creating a video meant to prevent bullying across the country.

鈥淚t's important because you can't let it get deep down inside you because it will make you want to do something that you shouldn't do, it's good that we accomplished that video so we can show people that's getting bullied to go get help,鈥� stated Bessemer City Middle School student Jeremy King.
鈥淔or us it's just like we're family and we aren't supposed to be working against each other , we're supposed to be working together,鈥� stated Immanuel Clay.
Teachers say winning the award has given students an extra boost of confidence within their community.
鈥淭he fact that they were able to succeed in the climate and culture that we've been able to establish with our students is something that is phenomenal,鈥� explained Dr. Yuvraj Verma, a Bessemer City Middle School teacher.

鈥淚t has you know empowered them, you know given them a voice to stand up against bullying, which is very prevalent,鈥� explained Bessemer City School teacher Tiffany Pugh.
Principal Lisa Heard says the school hopes to start a trend of preventing bullying across the globe.
鈥淥ther educators encourage your students to build a video, but we're going to top it again next year,鈥� stated Heard.
