Suspect shot by Birmingham police booked in jail after hospitalization
The man Birmingham police say was shot by an officer last week is now in the Jefferson County Jail after being released from the hospital.
Jaylin Artez Patton, 29, of Birmingham, is being held on a $273,000 bond. He is charged with attempting to elude, disorderly conduct, possession of marijuana, drug trafficking and possession of a controlled substance, according to the jail website.
Birmingham police released new body cam footage Friday afternoon during a news conference showing the shooting involving a local officer. The department released video from the incident on Wednesday.
WARNING: The video above could be disturbing to some people.
Police originally said the suspect shot at officers, but the video released seems to tell a different story. Thurmond said he wanted to clarify the facts of the case.
Thurmond told 米兰体育 13 that this all started with a traffic stop on I-59/20 between Airport Road and Tallapoosa Boulevard. The video shows a man, who police identified as Jaylin Patton, getting out of his car and grabbing something. He is seen running toward the fence as an officer tells him to drop his gun. Patton eventually throws what is believed to be a gun over a fence near 47th Street and 14th Avenue North before hopping over himself.
As an officer screams at him not to pick up the "gun," Patton appears to pick up the object he threw and keeps running. That鈥檚 when the officer fired a number of shots, and Patton was shot.
The video does not show Patton firing any shots at the officer, but Thurmond said the department decided to release the video to make sure its transparent with the public.

"It gives a different view," he said, "and so, as you all would probably agree today, we鈥檝e seen a much different angle with some additional information that was displayed on the video. That鈥檚 why we want to release that to the public 鈥 to you all 鈥 in an effort just to be more transparent."
During the news conference, Thurmond said Patton was still in the hospital on a 48-hour hold, but he鈥檚 expected to make a full recovery. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is working to charge him. It鈥檚 unclear which charges he could face, but community member Antonio Williams feels the officer needs to be held accountable, too.
"The police 鈥 whatever criminal charges that they鈥檙e going to put on that young man for running from the police 鈥 they need to put the same charges on that cop for shooting," he said. "Wrong is wrong. Right is right."
Thurmond said ALEA did find a gun at the scene. The officer involved will remain on paid administrative leave until ALEA is done with its investigation. Thurmond said Patton was originally stopped for criminal activity seen by police before the shooting, but he did not say what he was doing.
