HOW DOES BIRMINGHAM STACK UP WITH OTHER U.S. CITIES, JOHN? WELL, GUY, CITIES LIKE PHOENIX AND BALTIMORE SAW THEIR HOMICIDE RATE DROP NEARLY 40% IN 2024, WHILE BIRMINGHAM SPIKED 20%. IN FACT, ITS 77 KILLINGS PER 100,000 RESIDENTS RIVAL SOME OF THE MOST DANGEROUS CITIES IN THE WORLD. NOW, THE COMMISSION HOPES THESE FINDINGS PUT THE CITY ON A SAFER TRACK FOR THE FUTURE. IT鈥橲 CALLED A ROADMAP TO A SAFER BIRMINGHAM. TODAY, A SPECIAL CRIME COMMISSION REVEALED FINDINGS FROM TWO MONTHS OF RESEARCH INTO THE CITY鈥橲 HOMICIDE PROBLEM. WE LIVE IN A GREAT CITY. THIS IS A GREAT COMMUNITY, BUT WE HAVE A LOT OF WORK TO DO AND WE鈥橰E PREPARED TO DO THAT WORK. THE 66 PAGE REPORT REVEALED REASONS FOR LAST YEAR鈥橲 HISTORIC HOMICIDE YEAR AND WAYS TO CURB THE DEADLY CRIMES. ITS MOST URGENT RECOMMENDATION WAS FORCED DETERRENCE. WHEN EXPLAINING THE BENEFITS OF TARGETING HIGH PROFILE VIOLENT CRIMINALS. IT HIGHLIGHTED SEPTEMBER鈥橲 MASS SHOOTING OUTSIDE THE HUSH LOUNGE BY ADDRESSING THE ROOT CAUSES AND DRIVERS OF VIOLENCE AMONG A SELECT GROUP, THE MODEL DISRUPTS RETALIATION AND ESCALATION THAT OFTEN FOLLOW INCIDENTS LIKE THE HUSH NIGHTCLUB SHOOTING. THE GROUP OF TWO DOZEN LAW ENFORCEMENT, CORPORATE AND COMMUNITY LEADERS ALSO STRESSED FINDING BETTER WAYS TO REACH THE YOUTH BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE. WE NEED TO OFFER THE CARROT AND ENCOURAGE OUR YOUNG BOYS TO CHOOSE A DIFFERENT PATH OF LIFE AS WELL. AND IF THEY DON鈥橳 WANT TO CHOOSE THAT, WE鈥橪L GIVE THEM THE ATTENTION WITH THE STICK. FORMER POLICE CHIEF A.C. ROPER SERVED AS THE COMMISSION鈥橲 STRATEGIC ADVISOR AND EMPHASIZED NOT LETTING THE REPORT鈥橲 FINDINGS GO TO WASTE. THIS IS A GOOD REPORT THAT WILL STAND THE TEST OF TIME. THE CITY WILL NEVER HAVE TO RELIVE THE COLLECTIVE COMMISSION DEVELOPED THIS VISION WITH THE WITH THE GUIDANCE OF THE COMMUNITY TO HELP MAKE BIRMINGHAM THE SAFEST CITY IN AMERICA. The Birmingham Crime Commission presented its report Monday which it calls a road map to make the city safer. It comes as the city sees a deadly start to the new year -- with already two homicides in Birmingham.Video above: Watch the full news conference.The city is also coming off a record-setting deadly 2024.Birmingham recorded 151 total homicides which would give it 77 per 100,000 residents.That rate would rival some of the world's deadliest cities, base on the most recent data. Last year, homicides dropped nearly 40 percent in both Baltimore and Phoenix, while jumping about 20 percent in Birmingham.A 66-page report details the city's findings including studies from other major cities that have reduced their violent crime and homicides.Some key categories mentioned were getting Glock switches off the streets and working on recruitment and retention with the police department."The collective commission developed this vision with the with the guidance of the community to help make Birmingham the safest city in America," Commission Co-Chair Lee Styslinger said.The city also plans to enhance lighting and cameras around the city with hopes to effect that change immediately. "This is a good report that will stand the test of time. It's not based on theory. It's based on let's get out here and do something and get to work," former Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper said.
