Birmingham's FOP representatives say they're losing confidence in police chief and administration
Some members of Birmingham鈥檚 fraternal order of police say they're losing confidence in the administration and that includes the police chief and the deputy chiefs who work under him.
Lawerence Billups, a veteran officer in the department and the vice president for Birmingham鈥檚 Fraternal Order of Police, says morale is low that鈥檚 why, he says, some officers are leaving and there are more prepared to leave.
A few weeks ago, 米兰体育 13 reported the department had to fill 296 sworn-in officer positions. Billups says that number has grown to 300.
"We had a officer leave last week and he left not because he made more money. He basically strictly said it was about the morale,鈥 Billups said.
Billups says there's a lack of leadership within the department's administration. He says, last year he asked the chief, 鈥榃hat direction is the department going in?
鈥淚t's been a year since I asked. We don't know where we're headed to and that's not how you lead men and women by not giving them the direction,鈥 Billups said.
Scott Thurmond was picked by Mayor Randall Woodfin to be police chief in early 2022 after former chief Patrick Smith abruptly resigned.
Shortly after 米兰体育 13 interviewed Thurmond asking him about morale in the department, Thurmond said, "I've heard rumors. You know, people are happy, but I know that not everyone's happy. Of course. It's just it would be difficult to please everyone."
Two years later, it appears people still aren't happy.
鈥淭he thing is with Thurmond. He's a good person. He has a good heart, but he lacks leadership skills,鈥 Billups said.
Billups says, it鈥檚 getting harder to respond to homicides and fight crime because they don't have enough officers, and it's putting them at risk.
鈥淲e're at a critical time now. All hands have to be on deck. We have to make sure we take these streets back."

Birmingham鈥檚 mayor Randall Woodfin is responding to these issues saying,
鈥淟et me be clear: I support BPD leadership.
FOP leadership and I are in constant communication. They understand the challenges our officers face and we work in tandem to address them.
It's unfortunate that some members of FOP, those who speak for themselves and not FOP as a whole, are causing distractions and not constructive solutions. We hope they join our efforts in bringing new recruits to the force.鈥
Billups says there are plans to share the FOP鈥檚 retention and recruiting solutions with the mayor鈥檚 office. That meeting he says should happen soon.
Next month, Billups says the FOP plans to hold a vote of no confidence in the administration.
