Chiefs fan reunites with team that saved her after blood clots sent her from "13 seconds" to the ER
Thursday marked an incredible reunion for 23-year-old Amanda Steinbach.
It all started in January 2022, during that crazy Chiefs-Bills '' Divisional Round playoff game.
The then-21-year-old was watching her favorite football team when she started having trouble breathing.
鈥淚 thought it was just anxiety, and then it turns out a couple of hours later it was not!" Steinbach tole KMBC 9 with a laugh.
When the shortness of breath didn鈥檛 stop, Steinbach鈥檚 parents rushed her to the emergency room at St. Luke's East Hospital.
鈥淢y blood pressure was low," she recalled.
Scans showed she had a massive blood clot and thousands of smaller clots in her lungs.
鈥淪he had an acute pulmonary embolism," Dr. Jacob Shepherd with St. Luke鈥檚 Health Systems shared.
Doctors said it was a life-threatening condition. According to Shepard, she was nearly in respiratory failure when she came to the hospital.
The 1,000-plus blood clots were terrifying for Steinbach and her family.
On Thursday, the 23-year-old returned to where she spent more than a month in 2022, St. Luke's on the plaza. She developed good friendships with several nurses who helped her through the challenging event. That鈥檚 why she wanted to come back and thank them.
She鈥檚 still a Chiefs fan. Like everyone else, she can't wait for this weekend鈥檚 game. She鈥檚 just happy to be able to watch more games.
"Just want to thank everybody because they truly did save my life," Steinbach said.
