Chip and Joanna Gaines donate $1.5 million to St. Jude

'Fixer Upper' stars make major donation to children's hospital

Chip and Joanna Gaines donated $1.5 million to St. Jude Children's Hospital. The pair presented the hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, with a check earlier this month and gifted the nearby St. Jude Target House with a massive playhouse they personally designed for the kids.鈥淲hen we heard that the space outside of Target House could use a little love, we knew right away that we wanted to create a sweet playhouse for the kids to enjoy,鈥 Joanna said at the event, according to People. 鈥淭here鈥檚 something so special about spending time together outside and while we鈥檙e hopeful that these families will not have to stay here for very long, we wanted to create a retreat for them to explore while they are here.鈥濃淎s we walked in today, a little boy told us that he鈥檚 鈥榙emo day-ing鈥 his cancer treatment and that鈥檚 pretty much the best thing I鈥檝e ever heard. In our world, demo day marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of a newer, more exciting one,鈥 Chip said at the event, according to People. 鈥淎nd that鈥檚 exactly what we want for you. We鈥檙e pulling for each and every one of you.鈥漈he playhouse is behind an archway covered in flowers and has a play kitchen where kids can pretend to be chefs, an area for reading and plenty of space to play, according to People. The donation was raised through Chip's recent Chip-In Challenge. In 2017, Chip helped raise $230,000 for St. Jude, and this year's goal was to top that. Since raising that kind of money is "a tall order," Chip called in some reinforcements. He tapped support from fellow celebrities Jennifer Lopez, Alex Rodriguez, Drew Barrymore, Kacey Musgraves, the members of Florida Georgia Line, Jessie James Decker, Lauren Daigle, Kevin Love and Taylor Calmus, just to name a few. In the same week the challenge was announced, it was shared that Chip's marathon trainer, Gabriele Anderson Grunewald 鈥 who is also known as Gabe 鈥 and had been battling a rare form of cancer for nearly 10 years had gotten sicker overnight."I understand that Gabe is not a patient at St. Jude, but right now, she is fighting for her life. Cancer is ugly and it is mean and it doesn鈥檛 fight fair. This has gotten extremely personal," Chip wrote in an Instagram post.In the post he promised to match all donations made to the Chip-In Challenge by midnight that night, with a goal of hitting $500,000. He said he would also double that amount "in the form of a donation to the Brave Like Gabe Foundation, in Gabe's honor." Gabe died that same day.In total, supporters helped raise more $2 million for both charities, according to Chip's post on Instagram:"THANK YOU ALL 鈥 you blew this thing out of the water. Because of YOU, we have raised $1.49 million for @stjude and $512,000 for the @bravelikegabe Foundation. Over TWO MILLION DOLLARS raised for the fight against cancer! This campaign is proof that when we all work together for something bigger than ourselves, anything is possible," he wrote.
