Tips from local milliner, Kenzie Kapp
The Kentucky Derby may take place on May 6, but it's never to early to start putting together your look. What kind of dress will you wear? Something decidedly southern, or far away from that? Better question...hat or no hat? For those of you out there who are #teamhat, read on for expert tips to find the best one for you, courtesy of Kenzie Kapp, creative director and milliner of The Mill by Kenzie, a well known hat shop in Kentucky.
What kind of hat would you recommend for a first timer Derby goer?
I recommend wearing something that is going to make you look good and feel like a million bucks, as well as be comfortable at the same time. There is nothing worse than being uncomfortable and not up to par on Derby day!
Here are some factors to help you determine what type of hat to wear:
If you are going to wear a hat, I recommend one with an angle so photographers can still see your face. Something smaller, such as a fascinator or headpiece will keep your face visible. If you have plans after the Derby and plan to wear a hat, what will you do about hat hair? If you don't have a hair stylist on hand, I would suggest a fascinator, headpiece, disc, buntal, or percher. That way, if you choose to take your hat off, you can party on without a hair out of place. Hate wearing jewelry? A hat will probably exhaust you as well. A fascinator or headpiece is a much better option for you.
What would you suggest for women who want a less-is-more hat look for the Derby?
A solid color. Use different supplies and textures in the same color to create an interesting look. Another option is to use slightly darker or lighter shades of the same color in different supplies and textures for a tone-on-tone look.
Do your dress and hat always have to match? Can you chose a hat that doesn't go with your dress?
While your dress and hat do not always have to match, most people tend to go this way. It's a very hard sell to get people to not match, which I think has to do with the fact that most people do not wear hats/headpieces on a regular basis. Personally, I like the word "coordinate" rather than "match." My personal style is everything flows but nothing matches.
For those that are going to Derby parties at a bar or home (as opposed to the actual Derby) what kind of hat would you suggest wearing?
Some parties are as fancy as the Derby itself. The women go all out as if they are going to the actual Derby. For this type of party, you would want to be dressed up from head to toe! It just depends on the type of party.
At house parties or cookouts you want to be functional and able to get in on the action. That's why I recommend a simple sun hat, fedora, a fun fascinator, or a headband. At bars, the lighting can be dark, and you want people to be able to see you. I would suggest a fascinator with a pop of color, a headband or maybe even a percher.
