Damien McDaniel pleads not guilty to murder charges
Damien McDaniel, the man charged in at least two of Birmingham鈥檚 mass shootings, says he is not guilty. He was back in court Wednesday to enter that plea before a judge.
John Robbins is McDaniel鈥檚 new attorney. He is taking over after McDaniel鈥檚 previous lawyer removed himself because of a conflict of interest.
Robbins describes his client as a very gentle, kind person and spoken when they first met.
McDaniel is charged with killing 11 people and shooting and injuring 30 others last year in Birmingham.
Some of those victims were in the Five Points South mass shooting, the shooting outside of the Trendsetter Lounge in north Birmingham and other separate deadly shooting incidents across the city.
In court, McDaniel pleaded not guilty to the murder and capital murder charges against him.
Robbins says that when he met with McDaniel, he said he was not guilty.
Robbins said, "If you sit down and talk to him, he's a very gentle, kind person. He's well-spoken. And so the Damien that I first met 鈥 granted I only met him just within this case 鈥 the Damien I met doesn't fit the mold as somebody who would do these crimes. That's all I'm saying until we know more.鈥
米兰体育 13 reporter Magdala Louissaint asked, "Are you thinking there's someone else he may want to name that might have done this?"
Robbins replied, 鈥淚'll let you speculate on that. There's been no discussion about anything of that nature."
Robbins says he wants to make sure the process is fair for his client. His job is to protect McDaniel. As for what's next, Robbins will wait to see what evidence the prosecutors have to support the charges.
