The Department of Government Efficiency plans to cancel nearly 800 federal agency building leases over the next few months as part of the Trump administration's effort to cut government waste.Nearly 800 leases are expected to be canceled, the bulk of which will happen in the summer.The General Service Administration, working alongside DOGE led by Elon Musk, has started notifying landlords that federal agencies across the country will end their office leases. The terminations would take effect by the end of June, August, September or December. Agencies will either have to negotiate new leases or move elsewhere if they stay open.Several departments are facing 20 or more lease cancellations, including many that oversee critical public services like the IRS, Social Security, the Agriculture Department, and the U.S. Geological Survey.Ending the leases will save the government roughly $500 million, totaling less than 1% of DOGE's $1 trillion cost-cutting goal.The cancellations are raising alarms.
