Editorial: Keeping Birmingham clean
Birmingham recently played host to thousands of visitors for the NCAA Women鈥檚 Basketball Tournament, showcasing the Magic City at its finest. Next month, the Indy Grand Prix will speed into town, and in July, we鈥檒l welcome first responders and their families for the World Police and Fire Games.
These events don鈥檛 just put us on the map鈥攖hey significantly boost our local economy by millions of dollars.
We鈥檙e proud of the world-class amenities Birmingham has to offer, but there鈥檚 one glaring issue marring our city鈥檚 image鈥攍itter.
Trash-laden exit ramps, overpasses, and city streets leave an undesirable impression. Littering isn鈥檛 just unsightly鈥攊t鈥檚 illegal, costly, and punishable by hefty fines or hours of community service.
Let鈥檚 work together to keep Birmingham beautiful. If you see litter, especially in areas unsafe to clean on your own, act by reporting it. Cities and counties have reporting tools鈥攃all, visit their websites, or local apps. In Birmingham, dial 3-1-1.
You can also join community clean-up efforts. This month, Alabama People Against a Littered State is rallying volunteers and supplying materials to tackle litter.
