Egg prices in April have fallen by more than a dollar for the first time in months. The latest Consumer Price Index shows the average price of dozen Grade A eggs was $5.12 in April, compared to a record high $6.23 in March. While the average price of eggs fell 12.7%, the steepest decline was in 2023.
Egg prices spiked in October 2024 due to a widespread outbreak of avian flu.
Outbreaks in commercial egg-laying farms have led to the loss of 31 million birds this year, according to the latest report of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. While outbreaks are still occurring across 10 states, the magnitude of bird losses is much lower in March and April compared to the start of the year.
Aside from eggs, the price index for frankfurters and oranges went down 5.2% and 3.7%, respectively. Meanwhile, coffee and other beverages, including tea, went up in April.
The average price of coffee per pound has been rising this year from $7.02 in January to $7.54 in April. Several factors have contributed to the rise in coffee prices, including climate change. Two of the world's biggest coffee producers, Brazil and Vietnam, have been impacted by drought and excessive rains, which have reduced coffee production.
