HOME 1989 BATTERY THAT SHORTED OUT IN THE GARAGE AND IT KIND OF EXPLODED AND WENT THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE HOUSE WITH THE HELP OF PAL POLICE ATHLETIC LEAGUE OF THE PALM BEACH COUNTY SHERIFF鈥橲 OFFICE AND OTHER COMMUNITY GROUPS THEIR FAMILY HOME WENT FROM THIS. TO THIS WE WERE ABLE TO RECEIVE A COMMUNITY GRANT AND PART OF THAT GRANT WAS VOLUNTEERISM A COMMUNITY PROJECT FOR THE KIDS. IT WASN鈥橳 FOR ALL THEIR HELP, YOU KNOW, EVERYBODY THAT VOLUNTEERED AND PBSO AND PAL AND WE WOULDN鈥橳 BE IN THIS HOUSE VERONICA AND PAUL HAVE A 35 YEAR OLD SON JOSHUA. A THE WAY IN TWENTEEN SO FOR THE COMMUNITY TO COME TOGETHER AND HELP BUILD BACK THEIR HOME MEANS SO MUCH TO THE HERBST FAMILY UNBELIEVABLE. IT鈥橲 REALLY UNBELIEVABLE. 'We were homeless': Community rebuilds family's home after fire

It was a life-changing transformation for one family in Florida. "We were homeless, just like that. So ... I don鈥檛 have the words," said Paul Herbs, who lost his house to a fire in 2020. " battery that shorted out in the garage, and it kind of exploded and went throughout the whole house," Veronica Herbs said. The Herbs family said they moved into their home in Lake Worth in 1989. They were devastated when they lost their house more than two years ago, unsure of what was next.That's when the local chapter of the Police Athletic League of the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office and community groups, including RX Screen, Living Water Pool Service, the Home Depot, Lansing Building Products and Avante Construction stepped in to help. "We were able to receive a community grant and part of that grant was volunteerism, a community project for the kids," said Maj. Ron Mattino of the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office. "If it wasn鈥檛 for all their help, and everybody that volunteered and PBSO and PAL, we wouldn鈥檛 be in this house," Veronica Herbs said. The Herbs also have a 35-year-old son, Joshua, who has cerebral palsy. The mother of his children died in 2015."They鈥檙e stuck with grandma and grandpa. So, here we are and they鈥檙e thrilled with the pool. They鈥檙e in it every day and it鈥檚 just unbelievable," Veronica Herbs said.
