8-year-old girl shot twice during shootout in Birmingham's Gate City
An 8-year-old girl was taken to the hospital following a shooting in the Gate City neighborhood Sunday night.
The Birmingham Police Department said it responded to the scene of a shots fired call along with a juvenile shot on Joppa Avenue at approximately 9:30 p.m.
They believe 60 to 70 people were gathered in Marks Village Housing Community when a shootout began. Shot Spotter picked up a number of alerts in and around the area.
BPD says nearly 70 bullets were fired across five different locations during the incident, and the child was struck by at least two of those shots while inside a car with her family.

The girl was taken to a nearby fire station, where she was then transported to Children's of Alabama Hospital. Police say she will need surgery, but is expected to be okay.
A woman was also injured during the incident, however, it was not by gunfire. Police said she was injured in the aftermath of the shooting.
Neither of the victims were determined to be an intended target.
