HEART Birmingham hits the streets to address homeless concerns
IN THE URBAN ALCHEMY, BIRMINGHAM HEART TEAM HAS BEEN WORKING FOR OVER A MONTH TO ADDRESS THE CONCERNS OF THE HOMELESS COMMUNITY. HEART STANDS FOR HOMELESS ENGAGEMENT ASSISTANCE TEAM. THE GROUP GOES OUT TO HELP THE UNHOUSED THAT MIGHT BE EXPERIENCING A CRISIS, MENTAL ILLNESS OR DRUG ADDICTION. 米兰体育 13 JARVIS ROBERTSON WENT WITH THEIR OUTREACH TEAM TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THEIR EFFORTS TO HELP THE HOMELESS. BECAUSE PEOPLE LIKE, WHO ARE YOU COMING OVER HERE? YOU COMING INTO MY SPACE? IT鈥橲 LIKE THEY REAL LIVING QUARTERS. ARTIE GILBERT LEADS THE BIRMINGHAM HEART TEAM FOR URBAN ALCHEMY. HE UNDERSTANDS THAT INTERACTING WITH THOSE WHO ARE HOMELESS TAKES A CERTAIN APPROACH. WE WANT TO COME. HELLO. HOW ARE YOU? GOOD MORNING. IS EVERYTHING OKAY? WE鈥橰E JUST COMING THROUGH TO DO A WELLNESS CHECK. DO YOU NEED ANY BLANKETS? TOWELS? COME OFF WITH SOMETHING. FIRST OFF, GIVING THE OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF BIRMINGHAM HEART WAS JANUARY 6TH. SINCE THEN, THEY鈥橵E ENGAGED 204 PEOPLE, PROVIDED 435 PEOPLE WITH SERVICES, AND PLACED TEN PEOPLE WITH A HOUSING PROVIDER. WE LOADED UP AND HIT THE STREETS WITH THE HEART TEAM TO SEE HOW THEIR OUTREACH MISSION WORKS. WE MADE A STOP ON THE SOUTH SIDE BECAUSE THEY RECEIVED A CALL ABOUT CONCERNS OF HOMELESS PEOPLE IN THE AREA. WHEN WE FIRST GOT HERE, THEY WERE, YOU KNOW, WE TALKED TO THEM. THEY WERE INVITING US IN. NOW THEY鈥橰E THEY RUN BACK INSIDE. THEY DON鈥橳 WANT ANYTHING TO DO WITH US. HOW MANY? HOW MANY IS IT? IT鈥橲 JUST TWO PEOPLE. SOME PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN THE APARTMENT COMPLEX ACROSS FROM THE ABANDONED HOME WHERE THE COUPLE HAS BEEN LIVING, WERE UNCOMFORTABLE BY THEIR PRESENCE. WE鈥橵E HAD THREE PEOPLE APPROACH US SINCE WE鈥橵E BEEN OUT HERE. THEY NEED TO GO VERY AGGRESSIVELY, APPROACHED US. TARRANT YOUNG AND PRECIOUS HOWARD ARE PART OF THE HEART TEAM AND SAY OUTREACH IS IMPORTANT FOR THEM TO NOT MAKE A PERSON FEEL UNWANTED OR IN THE WAY, BUT RATHER LOVED. I鈥橵E EXPERIENCED HOMELESSNESS BEFORE. FOR MONTHS I鈥橵E LIVED IN AN ABANDONED HOUSE BEFORE WITH NO FRONT DOOR. SO I鈥橫 NOT AFRAID OF THEM BECAUSE THEY鈥橰E PEOPLE. THEY鈥橰E HUMAN. ACCORDING TO THE CITY OF BIRMINGHAM, IN 2024, 2083 INDIVIDUALS SOUGHT OUT HOMELESS SERVICE PROVIDERS IN JEFFERSON, SHELBY AND SAINT CLAIR COUNTIES. MOST OF THEM WERE IN BIRMINGHAM. THE HOMELESS COUPLE I SAW TODAY TOLD THE HEART TEAM THAT THE PROPERTY OWNER GAVE THEM PERMISSION TO STAY INSIDE AS LONG AS THEY DIDN鈥橳 INVITE MORE PEOPLE AROUND. IF IT WASN鈥橳 FOR THE HOUSE, THEY鈥橠 BE LIVING HERE, MAYBE RAINING, SO THEY GOT THE TARP ON THE TOP. EVEN IN THE MOST DIRE OF SITUATIONS, THERE鈥橲 STILL A RESEMBLANCE OF A HOME WITH A RUG, SOFA, AND WINDOW. IT鈥橲 THE IT鈥橲 THE IT鈥橲 THE IMAGINATION OF THE MIND TO ENDURE. WHATEVER THE TURMOIL THAT THEY鈥橰E G
