Homewood unites for Earth Day: volunteers pick up trash lining Shades Creek Greenway
Just three days before Earth Day, the City of Homewood Beautification Board and Environmental Commission coordinated a trail clean-up day.From 9 a.m. to noon people arrived at the trailhead of the newly opened Wildwood Shades Creek Trailway extension. Volunteers then grabbed trash bags and set out to take care of their community. Some went on foot, and others hopped in canoes to get the job done.Pieces of trash lining the trail and creek were picked up and thrown away, leaving the natural area looking rejuvenated. Around 60 people signed up online to take part in this community event. This section of the trail opened up for use earlier this year. It is Phase II of Shades Creek Greenway extension, which is part of the Red Rock Trail System. Homewood City Councilor and Liaison of the Homewood Beautification Board Nick Sims was there to help the clean-up efforts. Sims said that trail has been in the works since the early '90s."It's kind of a celebration even as much as it is a clean-up event too," Sims said.Today's event is just one of many that are taking place this Earth week.
