Man in wheelchair killed in apparent drive-by in Woodlawn neighborhood
A homicide investigation is underway after a man in a wheelchair was killed in a drive-by shooting in Birmingham's Woodlawn community.
It happened near the intersection of 59th Street North and 1st Avenue North, not far from Woodlawn High School and the Birmingham Public Library, according to the Birmingham Police Department.
Officers say they were called to the scene around 3 p.m. with Shot Spotter picking up several rounds fired in the area.

The victim, 62-year-old Michael Coleman, who is known to spend a lot of time in the area, was reportedly hanging out with a group of people under a tree near the roadway when someone pulled up in a car and began firing.
"Different people would come by and bring him lunch and bring him breakfast. You could always find him right here under the tree," said Sheila Coleman, the victim's sister-in-law.
Coleman was found unresponsive in his wheelchair and suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue.
"We don't believe he was the target in this shooting," said SGT LaQuitta Wade, public information officer with BPD.
"With a person having ALS and in the last stage of it, it's just so sad and senseless that somebody would drive by and do a killing on a person struggling to live," said Sheila.
