'I have a lot of love and support': Team USA Olympic weightlifter training at home for Tokyo
C.J. Cummings is home training to do something no one from the state of South Carolina has done before.
Cummings is set to compete on the U.S. Olympic Weightlifting Team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Summer games.
"When the official announcement happened, it was amazing," Cummings said. "I had a lot of love and support. To get that kind of love and support was amazing."
The announcement came a year later. Cummings was set to make his Olympic debut in 2020, but COVID-19 forced the games to be postponed.
"A lot of athletes were fighting to have it in 2020," Cummings explained. "I just thought about the positives. I said, 'You know what? It gives me a whole another year to train and get better for this year.'"
Cummings holds 23 different American weightlifting records and has racked up a lot of hardware throughout his young career. Now, Cummings hopes to add a gold medal to his collection.
"It would be amazing. That would be like the best," he said. "The ultimate award for my trophy collection."
