Ian McKellen reveals major stars who turned down Gandalf role in 鈥楲ord of the Rings鈥�
Ian McKellen is beloved as Gandalf in the 鈥淟ord of the Rings鈥� franchise, but he almost missed out on the role.

In an interview withthe esteemed actor shared that he was not the first choice to play the character.
鈥淚 don鈥檛 think you鈥檙e ever the first choice. I certainly wasn鈥檛 the first choice for Gandalf,鈥� McKellen said. 鈥淭ony Hopkins turned it down. Sean Connery certainly did. They鈥檙e all coming out of the woodwork now, and I hope they feel silly.鈥�
Playing one of Middle Earth鈥檚 most famous wizards is just one of many memorable roles for McKellen. He next appears in the forthcoming film 鈥淭he Critic,鈥� playing Jimmy Erskine, 鈥渁n acid-tongued theater reviewer who yields a corrosive influence over a struggling actress named Nina Land.鈥�
McKellen is leaning into playing the villain.
鈥淥ften the devil has the best tunes and the best lines, and it鈥檚 fun to play an outrageous man who clearly has some emotional problems,鈥� he told the publication.
The new movie is set to debut at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Its star believes in the challenging project.
鈥淚t was an intriguing script, tending toward melodrama,鈥� McKellen said. 鈥淚f the audience doesn鈥檛 believe in what we鈥檙e doing, then they might find some of the action a bit overwrought. It was a tricky balance to strike.鈥�
The 48th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival kicked off Thursday and runs through Sept. 17.
