'It couldn鈥檛 go any other way but guilty': Jamea Harris' mother pleased with verdict
It's been over two years since family and loved ones have seen or heard Jamea Harris' voice. The fatal shooting of the Birmingham mother left a void in the hearts of those who knew her.
Michael Davis and former University of Alabama basketball player Darius Miles were arrested and charged in her death.
On Friday, Davis was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Decarla Heard, Jamea's mother, says this trial was tough to endure.
"We watched five days of every angle; and it was gut-wrenching to me because I had five days of watching how my child died," Heard said.
Jamea's stepdad, Kelvin Heard, was pleased with how the jury remained focused during the trial. He says the defense's strategy was distracting.
"The way she tried to besmirch Jamea鈥檚 name, I felt like that was uncalled for. It was extremely insensitive," he said.
Davis did take the stand during his trial. But the family believe there's more Davis could've said.
"When the defendant got a chance to testify, the one thing he did not do when he had the opportunity was say I鈥檓 sorry," Kelvin said.
