Wisconsin high court suspends Milwaukee judge accused of helping man evade immigration authorities
MILWAUKEE COUNTY COURTHOUSE. AND NOW TONIGHT, THAT鈥橲 WHERE WE FIND 12 NEWS HANNAH HILYARD LIVE THIS EVENING, HANNAH. SOMEONE ELSE WILL TAKE ON JUDGE DUGAN鈥橲 CASELOAD. RIGHT, BLAKE. CHIEF JUDGE CARL ASHLEY MAKING THAT DECISION AS ONE OF HIS JUDGES WAS ESCORTED OUT OF THESE VERY DOORS HERE ALONG 10TH STREET IN HANDCUFFS. A WHIRLWIND FRIDAY FOR JUDGE HANNAH DUGAN. PUBLICLY HANDCUFFED AND ARRESTED AT HER WORKPLACE. THEN JUDGE. JUDGE, ANYTHING TO SAY ABOUT THIS? RELEASED AFTER BEING CHARGED WITH TWO FEDERAL OFFENSES. A SCENE ON BLAST AROUND THE COUNTRY. A 12 PAGE CRIMINAL COMPLAINT SAYS JUDGE DUGAN ESCORTED THIS MAN, EDUARDO FLORES RUIZ, QUOTE, THROUGH A JURY DOOR TO HELP HIM EVADE IMMIGRATION AGENTS AT THE COURTHOUSE. APRIL 18TH. THE COURT DOCUMENTS SAY DUGAN WAS, QUOTE, VISIBLY ANGRY AND DEMANDED THE AGENTS SPEAK WITH THE CHIEF JUDGE. YOU KNOW, I CAN鈥橳 HAVE ANY COMMENT ON THAT. THAT鈥橲 A PENDING LITIGATION. CHIEF JUDGE CARL ASHLEY, SPEAKING ON THE MATTER FOR THE FIRST TIME MONDAY AFTER BRINGING IN A RESERVE JUDGE TO TAKE OVER JUDGE DUGAN鈥橲 CASELOAD. WHY DID YOU MAKE THAT DETERMINATION? WELL, THE THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS, I THINK FOR EVERYBODY鈥橲 SAKE RIGHT NOW, WE JUST WAIT A LITTLE BIT. AND SO HAVING A RESERVE JUDGE IS GOOD FOR THE LITIGANTS. IT鈥橲 GOOD FOR JUDGE DUGAN, AND IT鈥橲 GOOD FOR OUR COMMUNITY FOR AT LEAST NOW, FOR US TO SEE HOW THINGS ARE GOING TO UNFOLD. HOW LONG DO YOU EXPECT THIS RESERVE JUDGE TO BE? I CAN鈥橳 TELL YOU ANYTHING ABOUT THAT. NOW. WE鈥橰E JUST TAKING A STEP BY STEP ONLINE. COURT RECORDS SHOW FORMER JUDGE DAVID FEIS WAS ON THE BENCH IN HER COURTROOM MONDAY MORNING. A SCRAMBLE TO FILL HER SEAT IN A COURTHOUSE WITH A HISTORY OF BACKLOGGED CASES. I KNOW THERE鈥橲 A BACKLOG IN THE COURTHOUSE RIGHT NOW. DOES THIS IMPACT IT AT ALL? WELL, ANYTHING THAT鈥橲 A DISTRACTION FROM US DOING OUR WORK AFFECTS THAT. THE FACT THAT THIS HAPPENED IS UNFORTUNATE. BUT AS IT RELATES TO OUR CALENDARS, THAT鈥橲 SOMETHING WE STRUGGLED EVERY DAY. AND, JOHANNA, WE UNDERSTAND TONIGHT THE FEDS WERE ABLE TO EVENTUALLY ARREST FLORES. RUIZ. RIGHT. BLAKE. SO THE CRIMINAL COMPLAINT SAYS AN AGENT ACTUALLY ENDED UP RIDING THE ELEVATOR DOWN WITH THE DEFENDANT. THE DEFENDANT DID TRY TO RUN AWAY FROM THEM, BUT AFTER A BRIEF FOOT CHASE, THEY WERE ABLE TO ARREST HIM OUTSIDE OF THE COURTHOUSE. NOW, AS FOR JUDGE DUGAN, SHE DOES FACE A MAXIMUM OF SIX YEARS IN PRISON IF CONVICTED. BUT THIS PROCESS IS REALLY JUST GETTING STARTED. SHE IS EXPECTED BACK IN FEDERAL COURT NEXT MONTH. CERTAINLY A STORY FA
