Legion FC names Mark Briggs as club's next head coach
Legion FC has found its next head coach. The club announced Wednesday that Mark Briggs will become the second head coach in Legion FC history. "I'm so grateful to Legion FC for giving me this opportunity. In meeting with staff and ownership, I love the direction and I love the vision. It's a fantastic club that has top facilities, and then you look at the roster and you understand that there is a lot that can be achieved here. I look forward to building something here in Birmingham," Briggs said. It is the fourth head coaching job for the 43-year-old. Briggs spent the past five years at the helm of Sacramento Republic FC and led the club to 74 wins and 49 draws, reaching the United Soccer League-Championship playoffs four times, including a run to the Western Conference finals in 2023. Briggs and Sacramento Republic FC also reached the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2022 as a second division club 鈥� the first team to do so since 2008. Prior to Sacramento Republic FC, the Wolverhampton native was at the helm of Real Monarchs from 2017 to 2018. The team went 20-7-5 and earned the first playoff berth in the club's history."We are thrilled to welcome Mark as the next head coach of Birmingham Legion FC. He is a proven winner with extensive USL experience and is known for building strong team culture, developing players and driving success on the pitch. We are excited about the future of Legion FC under Mark's direction," CEO and chief soccer officer Jay Heaps said.Briggs also has an extensive playing career in England and the United States, playing professionally from 2000 to 2013. Briggs takes over after Legion FC and Tom Soehn parted ways on April 9. Eric Avila, who served as the club's interim head coach, will remain on staff, going back to his role as first-team assistant coach.Legion FC's first match under Briggs is set for Saturday, May 3, on the road against the Tampa Bay Rowdies. He will have his first home match on May 14 against Rhode Island FC.
