Alabama shoe store owner expects new tariffs to affect prices
INFLATED LATE FEES. WELL, A LOCAL SHOE STORE OWNER SAYS TARIFFS MAY CAUSE HIM TO RAISE PRICES. SCOTT STRAND OWNS TRACK SHACK, A SNEAKER STORE WITH TWO LOCATIONS IN BIRMINGHAM AND ONE IN HOOVER. THEY HAVE BEEN IN BUSINESS FOR NEARLY 30 YEARS. ACCORDING TO FOOTWEAR DISTRIBUTORS AND RETAILERS OF AMERICA, 99% OF SHOES SOLD HERE IN THE U.S. ARE IMPORTED. THE HIGH TARIFFS COULD LEAVE CUSTOMERS PAYING $220 FOR SHOES MADE IN VIETNAM THAT ARE CURRENTLY PRICED AT ABOUT $155. STRAND SAYS SNEAKERS ALREADY HAVE TARIFFS, BUT A BIG INCREASE IN THEM COULD AFFECT HIS BUSINESS. TARIFFS ON THESE PRODUCTS ANYWAY. YOU KNOW THERE鈥橲 ALREADY TARIFFS ON THEM. SO IF THEY GET RAISED BY A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT THEN THE PRICES WILL DEFINITELY GO UP. THERE鈥橲 A BIG YOU KNOW YOU KNOW UPTICK IN PRICES. AND THEN PEOPLE START YOU KNOW PLUS GOING TO BE UPTICK IN PRICES ON OTHER THINGS. THEY MAY THEY MAY CONSERVE THEIR SPENDING. AND YOU KNOW USE THAT MONEY ON SOMETHING ELSE. WE鈥橰E HOPEFUL THAT, YOU KNOW, RUNNING SHOES AND WALKING SHOES ARE SOMETHING THAT PEOPLE WILL ALWAYS WILL NEED. AND, YOU KNOW, MAYBE THEY WOULD CHOOSE TO CUT BACK SOMEWHERE ELSE. BUT WE DON鈥橳 YOU DON鈥橳 KNOW. I MEAN, YOU DON鈥橳 KNOW FOR SURE WHAT EFFECT IT WOULD HAVE. STRAND SAYS HE鈥橲 WATCHING THE MARKET CLOSELY AND RIG

They have been in business for nearly 30 years, but the prices now could change. According to Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America, 99% of the shoes sold in the U.S. are imports, and the high tariffs could, for instance, leave customers paying $220 for shoes made in Vietnam that are currently priced at $155.Strand says there are tariffs on the sneakers anyway, but they are watching the markets very closely now. "There's tariffs on these products anyway, there are already tariffs on them and if they get raised by a tremendous amount the prices will definitely go up," Strand said. "If there's a big uptick in prices and then people will start, you know, they may conserve their spending and, you know, use that money on something else. We're hopeful that, you know, running shoes and walking shoes are something that people always will need. And maybe they would choose to cut back somewhere else.
