Thriving mall turned ghost town: What's next for Brookwood Village
Brookwood Village was once a thriving epicenter of family fun but is now almost empty.
Brookwood Village first opened in the 70s it used to be known as Brookwood Mall. It sits right between two major highways, 280 and 31 ramps are yards away. Shades Creek runs through the property. The patio space overlooking the creek is now empty and worn down.
The once thriving shopping mall is now almost extinct. Residents say they're also waiting to see what next for Brookwood.
"They really want to know what is going to become part of our community, they want something here, something positive,鈥 Jennifer Andress said.
"I think it's a fantastic spot in town, and the fact that it's empty seems like a waste of space,鈥 Abby Brunson said.
There is a proposal on the table to turn the Belk shopping center into an Andrew鈥檚 Sports Medicine facility. However, it鈥檚 still going through a lengthy process to get the final stamp of approval. Homewood City Council will vote to approve an agreement with Mountain Brook City officials.
The agreement acknowledges that the two cities will have to work together on plans to revive and renovate Brookwood Village.
