Man says he kept McDonald鈥檚 meal 6 years to prove a point, tried to sell it on eBay
A Canadian man attempted to sell a hamburger and french fries combo meal that he said was from McDonald鈥檚 and purchased six years before the auction date in an attempt to prove an urban legend.
Dave Alexander, 52, said that he had heard that McDonald鈥檚 food doesn鈥檛 spoil, so he decided to investigate. He had his daughter purchase a plain cheeseburger and french fries reportedly from a McDonald鈥檚 in Ontario, Canada in 2012.
He said the cheeseburger didn鈥檛 have sauce or condiments on it to ensure it wouldn鈥檛 taint the experiment.
"I unwrapped them, placed the top bun to the side, set the whole thing on a shelf and waited,"
Alexander also put a homemade burger and french fries in storage so that he could compare the two.
Fast forward to 2018, Alexander inspected the two experiments and found that the difference between them was that the homemade version became 鈥渃harcoal-like.鈥�
Not much changed for the McDonald鈥檚 version, he said.
"The restaurant fries look like I bought them this morning. The buns both survived with the restaurant ones looking perfect and the homemade ones looking a bit rough but still hanging in there," he said.
The main difference between the fast-food version in 2018 from 2012 was that the cheese reportedly turned a weird brown color from its original yellow color.
"The cheddar that I used basically crumbled and turned to a super fragile brittle substance," he said. "The meat on the homemade one has gone into an unknown state. It appears rock hard, but I鈥檓 afraid to touch it.
"The meat from the restaurant burger is clearly dehydrated and as such has gone very thin but otherwise looks just like a thin meat patty.
"The super crazy thing is that we live on a farm. Flies are a part of life. In over six years, we have never once observed a fly or anything else, land on the cheeseburger or the fries. Strange,鈥� he said.
Alexander said he decided to auction off the meal and was surprised to find several people were interested.
He said someone even contacted him saying that they had a 2-year-old doughnut.
Not long after he made the eBay listing, however, the website took it down because it violated its policy that no items listed can be 鈥渦npackaged or expired food.鈥�
