Mexican states cannot sue BP
BP is responsible for close to 56 billion dollars in fines
Over 5 years ago the Deepwater horizon oil rig exploded on April 20th, 2010, killing 11 men, injuring 17, and spilled more than 200 million gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico.
Crude oil pumped into the Gulf for 87 days.
Today a federal appeals court upheld a lower court's dismissal of an oil spill lawsuit against BP by three Mexican states.
The courts said the Mexican federal government has already filed a similar lawsuit, which is still going through the court system.
This lawsuit is one of thousands of suits against BP from the explosion and pollution that followed.
BP is responsible for close to 40 billion dollars in fines, with an additional 16 billion due to the clean water act.
BP admits there's still a great deal of uncertainty when it comes to the long term effects on the environment.
