Joran van der Sloot told Beth and Dave Holloway that he killed their daughter while in Aruba in May 2005, and they were able to speak directly to him Wednesday in court.
Joran van der Sloot said he bludgeoned Natalee Holloway to death because she refused his sexual advances and then destroyed her remains.
Joran van der Sloot apologized to both the Holloway and his own family, saying that he hoped the statement would provide them with peace. He said he is no longer the person he was back then.
Beth and Dave Holloway spoke directly to him during the hearing to give their impact statements.
Beth Holloway
"Joran, for eighteen years you have denied killing my daughter Natalee," the impact statement from Beth Holloway said. "Your lies and manipulation, taunting us with fake news interviews and wild stories of what happened to her, have caused indescribable pain and harm to my family and me. The grief I feel lives way down deep in my soul. Now in the course of being sentenced for attempting to sell me her bodily remains, you have finally admitted that you, in fact, murdered her."
Beth Holloway continued to say that her daughter would have been 36, and that she may have been a mother. But van der Sloot destroyed that and the lives of the Holloways.

"You are a murder," she said in the statement. "Remember that every time that jail door slams shut. You are a killer. You didn't get what you wanted from Natalee - sexual satisfaction - so you brutally killed her. You didn't get what you wanted, so you killed her."
She told van der Sloot that he is the reason for all the pain in his family, and called him "the black mark" of Aruba.
She implored the court to give the maximum sentence and said that while he is living in prison, she will be living her life with the wonderful memories of her daughter.

Dave Holloway
Dave Holloway said nothing about the last 18 years was what he had wanted for his daughter.
"We never saw her attend the University of Alabama, where she was set to begin classes in August 2005 on a full scholarship," Dave Holloway said in his statement. "We never saw her pursue her dream of becoming a doctor. We never saw her dance again. We never saw Natalee celebrate another birthday or Christmas, walk down the aisle as a bride, or rock a newborn."
He said that despite what van der Sloot did, he does not feel like he is sorry for what he did to their family.
"We are satisfied that our daughter died at his hands, and that he acted alone," Dave Holloway said.
