Robert "Bob" Woods enlisted in the 106th Infantry Division in 1944 at the age of 20 and left home to fight on German battlefields. His battalion encountered heavy fire from the Germans on Dec. 14, 1944, many were killed, most were captured. Thousands of American and Allied POW's were made to march endless hours through the freezing landscape of Germany. He was moved from one POW camp to another until April 16, 1945. That's when the British 7th Armored Division liberated Stalag XI-B, Woods' POW camp. Woods said, "In every year since 1945 (I have) found means for commemorating the Liberation Day anniversary, albeit to a gradually decreasing degree. It's sanctity has never diminished." On March 15, 2023, Bob Woods was presented with medals long due him for his service to his country. Col. Mike Stahl, a retired Marine Corps veteran with six Purple Hearts, is a senior advisor to Fourth District Congressman William Timmons. Woods had a question about his veteran's benefits. Stahl met with the 97-year-old and after doing some research, discovered that Bob Woods was about 78 years past due for the presentation of the Bronze Star, the POW Medal, and the Purple Heart. He reached out to Medals of America and they created the box for presentation. The ceremony was held at Pine Grove Senior Living in Greenville, South Carolina, which is now home to Woods.
