What to do when a delivery goes wrong
If there鈥檚 an issue with your delivery, contact customer service immediately. Bleyer notes that flowers are delicate and shipping can sometimes be unpredictable. 鈥淢ost customer services will help you and sometimes even provide an arrangement that's even nicer than the one you ordered,鈥 says Bleyer.
Shopping local
For fail-safe blooms, shopping directly from a local florist is a great option. Bleyer says flowers bought locally tend to be fresher and have traveled less distance, meaning they鈥檒l last longer and hold up better. 鈥淎nother thing is that you can work with your local florist to customize your order. You can select different florals, you can stay within a certain budget,鈥 says Bleyer.
Don鈥檛 be afraid to DIY
Depending on the size of the arrangement, the type of flowers you buy, and various fees, delivery services can cost anywhere from $50 on the low end to $200 and more on the high end. For a less expensive, DIY approach, don鈥檛 be afraid to shop at your local grocery store and make your own arrangements. We visited a Trader Joe鈥檚 with a $30 budget and made our own custom bouquet using the following formula:
- A big, primary flower. We used garden roses.
- A smaller, secondary flower. We used spray roses.
- Greenery and stock flowers to fill the bouquet. We used eucalyptus and baby鈥檚 breath.
For long-lasting blooms
Whether you go the DIY route or buy from a flower shop, you鈥檒l want your arrangement to last. Before putting your flowers in a vase, be sure to remove all the leaves and greenery on the stems that will sit below the waterline to prevent rotting. Every couple of days, trim the stems and swap out the water in the vase to keep your arrangement looking fresh.
