TurboTax customers to receive checks for $141 million settlement
DETAILS RIGHT NOW AT 440 BEN. YEAH, AND MARIA, THIS ALL COMES FROM A LAWSUIT THAT CLAIMED TURBOTAX鈥橲 PARENT COMPANY INTUIT TRICKED MILLIONS OF PEOPLE NATIONWIDE INTO PAYING FOR FEDERAL TAX SERVICES THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN FREE. YOU MIGHT REMEMBER TURBOTAX鈥橲 FREE, FREE, FREE AD CAMPAIGN THAT LURED CUSTOMERS WITH PROMISES OF FREE TAX PREPARATION SERVICES. WELL, AS PART OF THIS SETTLEMENT, WHICH WAS ANNOUNCED LAST MAY, SO A YEAR AGO, THE COMPANY HAD TO SUSPEND THAT CAMPAIGN. AND THEN HERE鈥橲 WHAT HAPPENED. AND IT WOULD OFFER TWO FREE VERSIONS OF TURBOTAX. ONE WAS THROUGH THE IRS FREE FILE PROGRAM, WHICH ALLOWS LOW INCOME TAXPAYERS AND MEMBERS OF THE MILITARY TO FILE THEIR TAXES FOR FREE. ANOTHER WAS CALLED TURBOTAX TAX FREE EDITION, WHICH IS ONLY FREE FOR TAXPAYERS WHO HAVE SIMPLE RETURNS. WELL, AN INVESTIGATION FOUND THAT INTUIT USED SIMILAR NAMES FOR BOTH THOSE PRODUCTS, AND IT CONFUSED CONSUMERS. THEY EVEN BLOCKED THE IRS PROGRAMS LANDING PAGE FROM SEARCH ENGINE RESULTS DURING THE 2019 TAX FILING SEASON, WHICH LED PEOPLE WHO COULD HAVE USED THE IRS PROGRAM FOR FREE TO MISTAKENLY USE TURBOTAX鈥橲 PROGRAM INSTEAD AND THEN HAVE TO PAY MONEY. WELL, NOW, MORE THAN 4 MILLION PEOPLE, INCLUDING 75,000 HERE IN MASSACHUSETTS, WILL GET A CHECK IN THE MAIL FOR BETWEEN 30 AND $90 IF YOU ARE ELIGIBLE. HERE鈥橲 THE THING. YOU鈥橰E GOING TO GET AN EMAIL. IT鈥橲 FROM RUST CONSULTING. I KNOW IT DOESN鈥橳 SOUND LIKE IT鈥橲 FROM TURBOTAX, BUT THEY鈥橰E MANAGING THE SETTLEMENT FUND AND THAT WILL TELL YOU THE AMOUNT OF MONEY YOU鈥橰E GOING TO GET BACK. YOU DON鈥橳 NEED TO DO ANYTHING. YOU DON鈥橳 HAVE TO FILE A CLAIM. YOU DON鈥橳 NEED TO PAY ANY MONEY. IT鈥橲 ALL AUTOMATIC AND YOU DON鈥橳 NEED TO PROVIDE ANY ACCOUNT INFORMATION. CHECKS WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY MAILED OUT STARTING NEXT WEEK. AND YOU KNOW, WITH ANYTHING LIKE THIS, THERE鈥橲 GOING TO BE SCAMS THAT POP UP. SO AGAIN, DO NOT DO NOT PROVIDE ANY ACCOUNT INFORMATION.
