With President Trump's commencement address at The University of Alabama comes a huge international spotlight on the school and the city of Tuscaloosa as a wholeHe'll become the first sitting U.S. president to give a commencement speech at the Capstone, and while some students are thrilled to be a part of the historic event, others are speaking out against his visit.鈥淚t's an honor just to have a president, specifically a republican president because I鈥檓 a republican, but, you know, any president coming here, I think would be an honor," said Riley McArdle, president of UA College Republicans.鈥淯sually, it's a great honor for the university," countered Braden Vick, president of UA College Democrats. "This would be true of any president, if this wasn't Donald Trump. If this wasn't someone who has defiled the office of the presidency every day he has been in it.鈥漋ick's group and several other organizations aligned with the democratic party are participating in the Tide Against Trump Rally, a large protest of the event.鈥淲e have to have some sort of response, some sort of fighting back against the Trump administration to show the people of Alabama there are people willing to fight for the state, not just for themselves," said Vick. Beto O'Rourke, former U.S. Representative for Texas, is speaking at the protest."Overcoming Donald Trump鈥檚 dangerous attacks on our fellow Americans demands that we organize everywhere, including in communities that are too often written off or taken for granted,鈥� Rourke. 鈥淲hile Trump is coming to Alabama to divide and demean, we are bringing people together to fight for our neighbors, our freedoms, our democracy, and our future.
