Woman credits Apple Watch for saving her life
The alert one New England woman received on her smartwatch led to a real life-saving discovery.
Kim Durkee said she loves her Apple Watch. She said she wears it when she's enjoying the outdoors near her Maine home.
But, when she got three alerts this summer warning her something might be wrong with her heart rate, she decided to go to the emergency room to be safe.
"I said, 'Oh, I have afib,' and he said, 'What makes you think that? And I said, 'Oh, my (smartwatch) told me. And he said, 'Oh, really?'" Durkee said.
But, that doctor in Maine listened, and after several days of tests, they found a rare but serious tumor in Durkee's heart.
She headed to Mass General where she had five hours of open heart surgery.
Now, the tumor is gone and Durkee said she couldn't be more thankful.
"Had I not had the watch, I probably would have had a massive stroke," Durkee said. "So, I'm very grateful to be alive. So, without that watch, I might not be having this conversation with you right now."
Durkee said she got the watch for the feature that can alert authorities if someone falls because she likes to spend time hiking in the woods with her dog.
She just got a checkup and said she's doing great.
Now, Durkee said she is hoping to get the new Apple Watch model.
