Pharmacies across Alabama walkout to call for support in proposed bill to lower prescription costs
More than 100 pharmacies across the state closed their doors on Tuesday. It鈥檚 a voluntary effort to show support for a proposed bill to help locally owned pharmacies.
Pharmacies across Alabama are participating in a walkout, but in Mountain Brook at Ritch鈥檚 Pharmacy, they changed it to a dark out to support Senate Bill 93.
Pharmacy owner Ralph Sorrell said he and his staff couldn鈥檛 close their doors on Tuesday because they want to make sure their customers get the care they need. That鈥檚 why they went dark but still made sure they could take a stance on the bill.
Senate Bill 93 would make it illegal to pass the cost of filling a prescription on to the patient by charging a higher co-pay. Sorrell said the current reimbursement process for pharmacies affects the bottom line.
鈥淟et鈥檚 just use an example鈥擡liquis,鈥 Sorrell said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a blood thinner for heart patients. If I dispensed one of those medications to myself, my insurance would reimburse me. It鈥檚 a $570 prescription. My insurance reimbursed me $13.50 below my cost. That doesn鈥檛 even cover the cost of the medication, much less the overhead and the time and effort that it takes to educate a patient about this medication.鈥
