'Let's just get it over': Highland Park residents concerned with lengthy drainage, flooding project
WE WILL KEEP YOU UPDATED AND RIGHT NOW WORK CONTINUES IN ANOTHER AREA OF BIRMINGHAM TO HELP WITH FLOODING AND DRAINAGE ISSUES. WE FIRST TOLD YOU ABOUT IT EARLIER THIS WEEK IN THE HIGHLAND PARK NEIGHBORHOOD. THE CITY SAYS IT WILL MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE, BUT IT鈥橲 GOING TO TAKE A GOOD AMOUNT OF TIME TO BE COMPLETED. 米兰体育 13 AARON LLEWELLYN LIVE IN LOCAL TONIGHT. YOU SPOKE WITH RESIDENTS NEARBY. SOME OF THEM ARE CONCERNED ABOUT THE LENGTH OF THIS PROJECT. AARON. YEAH. GUY. RIGHT NOW WE ARE ON 26TH STREET AND RED MOUNTAIN EXPRESS, AND BEHIND ME YOU CAN SEE WHERE THE BEGINNING OF THIS DRAINAGE CONSTRUCTION PROJECT IS. RIGHT HERE BEHIND ME. NOW, WE DID TALK TO THE CITY, AND THEY TOLD US THAT THIS PROJECT IS GOING TO TAKE A YEAR TO COMPLETE TO FIX THE HISTORIC FLOODING IN THIS AREA. NOW, RESIDENTS SAY THAT THEY鈥橵E BEEN ASKING FOR THIS PROJECT FOR A LONG TIME. NOW, WE KNOW THAT THIS PROJECT IS GOING TO BE COMPLETED IN PHASES, AND RESIDENTS SAY THAT THEY鈥橰E WILLING TO WAIT IF THAT MEANS THE ISSUE GETS FIXED. MAJOR CHANGES ARE COMING TO THE HIGHLAND PARK NEIGHBORHOOD WHEN IT RAINS, THERE鈥橲 HUGE AMOUNT OF WATER THAT COMES DOWN THIS STREET, AS WELL AS THE PARK FROM THE CALDWELL PARK SIDE, AND IT JUST GOES DOWN. AND THE CITY OF BIRMINGHAM IS WORKING TO ALLEVIATE THAT ISSUE. FOR NEIGHBORS LIKE AN UNCLE. APPARENTLY IT鈥橲 FILLED UP THE WHOLE BASEMENT AREA OF THE THEATER WAS IMPACTED. THE THEATER ACROSS THE STREET AND AND THE EPISCOPAL PLACE RETIREMENT HOME, WHICH IS PRETTY, PRETTY AWFUL. THE CITY IS TAKING ON THE $5.9 MILLION PROJECT, WHICH IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED IN SUMMER 2026. WAIT, WHAT A YEAR? NATS? OH, OKAY. PRISCILLA ELBERTA JUST MOVED INTO THE NEIGHBORHOOD BACK IN MARCH. MY MAIN CONCERN IS HOW BUSY IS THIS STREET GOING TO BECOME? IS IT GOING TO BECOME A MAJOR THROUGH STREET? ARE WE GOING TO BE THE DETOUR? AND FOR A SOLID YEAR? THAT DOES SEEM LIKE A LOT, BUT I GUESS WE鈥橪L WE鈥橪L ADJUST. AND THAT COULD BE AN ISSUE. BOTH NEIGHBORS SAY 26TH STREET IS HEAVILY TRAVELED, ESPECIALLY DURING RUSH HOUR IN THE MORNING AND EVENING, CAUSING SOME SAFETY CONCERNS. THEY GO REALLY FAST BECAUSE YOU鈥橰E GOING DOWNHILL. I JUST HAVE TO BE REALLY CAREFUL WHEN I LIKE BACK OUT OF HERE. I鈥橵E STARTED BACKING IN SO I CAN PULL OUT STRAIGHT. AND WHILE SHE鈥橲 SURPRISED IT鈥橲 A LONG TERM PROJECT, ELBERTA IS READY TO SEE THE IMPROVEMENTS BE MADE. LET鈥橲 JUST GET IT OVER AND DONE WITH. WE鈥橰E STILL KIND OF IN THE JUST MOVED IN PROCESS, SO IT鈥橲 JUST ONE MORE LITTLE HICCUP, AND THEN MAYBE ALL THE FLOODING WILL BE GONE. AND THEN BECAUSE IT TAKES TIME TO DO SOMETHING WORTHWHILE, PROGRESS, NOT PERFECTION. NOW THE CITY SAYS IF YOU ARE TRAVELING IN THIS AREA TO EXPECT DELAYS ON THE ROAD AND EXPECT TRAFFIC TO BE BACKED UP. NOW, WE鈥橰E ALSO TOLD THAT BUSINESSES AND RESIDENTS IN THE AREA ARE AWARE OF HOW THIS CONSTRUCTION WILL IMPACT THEM, AND THE CITY SAYS THAT IT IS GOING TO SEND OUT UPDATES ON THE PROGRESS OF THIS PROJECT. FOR NOW, WE鈥橰E LIVE HERE
