Massachusetts college grads get $1,000 surprise at commencement
More than 1,400 Massachusetts college graduates got a surprise at commencement Friday: A gift of $1,000.
Bridgewater State University鈥檚 undergraduate grads were each presented with a cash envelope from Robert T. Hale Jr., founder and CEO of Granite Telecommunications, as they walked across the stage at Gillette Stadium to accept their diplomas.
Hale urged the students to 鈥済ive a little more of yourself and take chances.鈥 The gift, he asked, should be divided with $500 for personal investment and $500 going toward charitable contributions.
"The first $500 is for you, to celebrate your accomplishments. The second envelope says 'give' on it. Give that $500 to somebody or another organization who could use it more than you," Hale said. "Share in the joy of giving. Every day is a great day to be a bear."
Hale, known for his $1,000 commencement gifts, donated $26.2 million to 70 charities to mark the completion of his first Boston Marathon. He was honored earlier this year by Boston Athletic Association with the Patriots' Award.
