Calera city councilor demands quicker response to power outages
ALLOWED TO COMMENT. TIME RIGHT NOW IS 606 AND NEW THIS MORNING IN CALERA, A CITY COUNCIL MEMBER SAYS IT TAKES TOO LONG AFTER STORMS HIT FOR THE POWER TO COME BACK ON IN SOME OF HER NEIGHBORHOODS. SHE SAYS THAT THEY ARE LEFT WITHOUT POWER FOR DAYS, AND MANY HAVE MEDICAL ISSUES. 米兰体育 13 BRYCE OLSON LIVE IN LOCAL AND CALERA THIS MORNING. AND BRYCE, YOU TOOK THE ISSUE TO ALABAMA POWER. GOOD MORNING CARLA SARAH. AFTER SPEAKING WITH CALERA COUNCIL MEMBER KAY TURNER, I WAS ABLE TO CONNECT HER WITH ALABAMA POWER TO HELP GET THIS ISSUE RESOLVED. NOW, TURNER TELLS ME WHEN STORMS HIT, THE POWER IS OFTEN KNOCKED OUT IN AREAS SUCH AS EMERALD RIDGE AND CAMDEN PARK. THEY APPEAR TO BE ON THE BACK END OF GETTING RESTORED. SHE ALSO SAYS DURING THE MOST RECENT OUTAGE, MULTIPLE RESIDENTS REACHED OUT TO HER DEMANDING ANSWERS BECAUSE THE HEAT CAN BE TOO MUCH TO BEAR WITH PEOPLE WHO HAVE MEDICAL ISSUES. WE HAVE CITIZENS THAT CONTACTED ME IN OUR AREA THAT HAVE CHILDREN WITH ASTHMA. WE HAVE INDIVIDUALS THAT ARE ON OXYGEN AND THEY鈥橰E THEY鈥橰E LOSING FOOD, WHICH IS MONEY, BECAUSE THE INSURANCE DOES NOT COVER THE LOSS. I ALSO SAT DOWN WITH ALABAMA POWER. THEY TELL ME DURING OUTAGES LIKE WE HAD THIS WEEKEND, THEY MAKE RESTORING THE POWER FOR MEDICAL INSTITUTIONS AND FIRST RESPONDERS THEIR TOP PRIORITY. WE PRIORITIZE OUR STORM RESTORATION, AND WE START WITH HEALTH CARE FACILITIES. THAT鈥橲 AT THE TOP OF OUR LIST. SO IF WE HAVE CUSTOMERS WHO HAVE LIFESAVING MEDICAL EQUIPMENT IN THEIR HOME, WE RECOMMEND THAT THEY REACH OUT TO US, LET US KNOW THAT THEY HAVE THOSE SITUATIONS AND THEY CAN REACH OUT TO US THROUGH CUSTOMER SERVICE OR THROUGH ONE OF OUR LOCAL BUSINESS OFFICES. AND ALABAMA POWER ENCOURAGES YOU TO KEEP BATTERIES IN YOUR HOME AND STAY TUNED TO LOCAL MEDIA AGENCIES DURING AN EMERGENCY. LI

During the most recent outage, Turner claims multiple residents reached out to her demanding answers because the heat was too much to bear for people who have medical issues.

"We have citizens that contacted me in our area that have children with asthma," said Turner, "We have individuals that are on oxygen and they're losing food which is money because the insurance does not cover the loss."

More than 133,000 people were without power from the storms last weekend across Alabama.
