2025 Hurricane Season: Colorado State forecasts more hurricanes than normal
Colorado State University (CSU) released its annual Hurricane Season Forecast in April, forecasting an above-average hurricane season for 2025. Check the video for the latest hurricane forecast.
Last year, 18 named storms stretched across the North Atlantic Ocean in 2024, 11 of which strengthened to hurricanes, and five strengthened further to major hurricanes.
Colorado State University forecasts 17 named storms, nine hurricanes, and four major hurricanes. While this forecast is less than the results from 2024, it's still an above-average hurricane season.
The average hurricane season between 1990 and 2020 saw 14 named storms, seven hurricanes, and three major hurricanes.
The above-average season stems from a potential neutral-t0-La Nina pattern. During a La Nina, wind shear weakens over the Atlantic, increasing tropical activity.
The National Weather Service will also issue a Hurricane Outlook closer to the start of the 2025 Hurricane Season.
