'Nothing but an embarrassment to this state': Tuberville's Alabama gubernatorial campaign getting backlash
U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., officially announced his campaign for Alabama's next governor. This came weeks after speculation, but the announcement has been met with criticism.
"This is pure ego; he is a failed U.S. Senator, said former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones, D-Ala.
Jones did not hold back his thoughts when discussing Tuberville. He believes the former Auburn University head football coach is ineligible to run for the state's highest office.
Tuberville's residency has been a topic of conversation.
"All the evidence indicates he has not lived in Alabama for the requisite period of time. He refuses to turn over tax returns to show that he has," Jones said.
"Even if it is a legal problem, does it get pursued?" said political analyst and University of Alabama professor Marissa Grayson. "Sen. Tuberville felt pretty confident that this would not be an issue that would keep him from being able to run."
Now that it's not a secret any more, this could be an easy rise to the top of the Republican ticket.
"If there was a Republican who was going to run against him, I think it would be someone I think is against the MAGA movement, and I just don鈥檛 think they would do very well," Grayson said.
