THE BIRMINGHAM CIVIL RIGHTS INSTITUTE. WELL, ON A LIGHTER NOTE FOR YOU OLYMPIANS AND OLYMPIC HOPEFULS ARE PASSING THROUGH OUR STATE ON THEIR JOURNEY TO PARIS. THE CANOE SLALOM OLYMPIC TRIALS GOT UNDERWAY THIS MORNING IN MONTGOMERY. 米兰体育 13 EMMA OWEN MADE THE TREK SOUTH TO CHECK IT OUT. FANS ALL SMILES, CHEERING LOUDLY AS WORLD CLASS KAYAKERS AND CANOEISTS RACE DOWN. THESE RAPIDS SUPPORT JET HINCKLEY, COMPETITION DIRECTOR FOR THE AMERICAN CANOE ASSOCIATION, SAYS MEANS A LOT TO THESE COMPETITORS. OFTENTIMES, THESE ATHLETES ARE COMPETING, YOU KNOW, AT VENUES WHERE IT鈥橲 LARGELY JUST COACHES, OFFICIALS AND THEIR PARENTS. YOU KNOW, IT VARIES FROM LOCATION TO LOCATION. SO I KNOW FOR THEM IT鈥橲 REALLY SPECIAL AND REALLY EXCITING TO BE ABLE TO COMPETE IN FRONT OF, YOU KNOW, HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE, THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE. HINCKLEY HOPES SEEING THESE ATHLETES IN ACTION WILL INSPIRE THE YOUNGER GENERATION, WHICH IS EXACTLY WHY KERRY CARLSON BROUGHT HER FAMILY. MY HUSBAND AND I HAD THREE BOYS, AND WE WANTED TO BRING THEM OUT, SHOW THEM WHAT THE OLYMPICS ARE ABOUT, WHAT SPORTING IS ABOUT, PERSISTENCE AND HARD WORK, UM, AND WHAT IT TAKES TO GET TO THIS LEVEL OF COMPETITION. SHE AND KATE TALIAFERRO, REFLECTING ON THESE LIFE LESSONS AS THEY SIT JUST FEET AWAY FROM ALL THE EXCITEMENT, TO BE ABLE TO SIT RIGHT NEXT TO THE WATER AND TO JUST CHEER ON THESE AMAZING ATHLETES THAT WE DIDN鈥橳 REALLY KNOW A WHOLE LOT ABOUT. WE鈥橰E LEARNING ABOUT A WHOLE NEW SPORT TODAY, WHICH IS REALLY EXCITING. CHARITY BORG AND HER HUSBAND ZACH ARE IN THE SAME BOAT. REALLY AWESOME. GREAT TO SEE THE OLYMPIC TRIALS IS DEFINITELY NOT SOMETHING WE鈥橵E SEEN BEFORE AND WE LOVE WATER SPORTS, SO WE WANTED TO THIS GUY TO SEE SOME OF THE TOP ATHLETES, WHICH IS REALLY FUN. AND IT鈥橲 JUST GETTING STARTED. COMPETITION CONTINUES TOMORROW MORNING AT MONTGOMERY, WHITEWATER AND JUST LIKE TODAY, THESE EVENTS ARE FREE TO WATCH. TOMORROW WE鈥橪L HAVE THE SECOND DAY OF SOLEMN AND THE. AND THEN THAT鈥橲 FOLLOWED BY A HEAD TO HEAD EVENT WHERE THE KAYAK CROSS ATHLETE ATHLETES ARE GOING DOWN THE RIVER AT THE SAME TIME IN PLASTIC BOATS, WHICH IS LIKE WHAT PEOPLE CAN TRY HERE. AND THEY鈥橰E ACTUALLY BUMPING INTO EACH OTHER. AND IT鈥橲 KIND OF A LIKE KIND OF NOT A FREE FOR ALL. THERE ARE RULES, BUT IT鈥橲 HEAD TO HEAD AND IT鈥橲 REALLY EXCITING. SO PEOPLE SHOULD DEFINITELY COME OUT AND WATCH THAT. AWARDS WILL IMMEDIATELY FOLLOW BEFORE ATHLETES PACK UP AND PREPARE FOR THE NEXT ROUND OF TRIALS.

The Canoe Slalom and Kayak Cross Olympic Team Trials are underway in Alabama's capital city.Saturday, fans packed the banks of Montgomery Whitewater to cheer on world-class kayakers and canoeists as they raced down the rapids.Jed Hinkley, competition director for the American Canoe Association, said this support means a lot to the Olympians and Olympic hopefuls."Oftentimes these athletes are competing, you know, at venues where it's largely just coaches, officials and their parents," Hinkley said. "It varies from location to location, so I know for them it's really special and really exciting to be able to compete in front of, you know, hundreds of people, thousands of people."Hinkley said he hopes the competitors will inspire the younger generation, which is exactly why Keri Carlson brought her family."My husband and I have three boys and we wanted to bring them out, show them what the Olympics are about, what sporting is about, persistence and hard work, and what it takes to get to this level of competition," Carlson said. She and Kate Taliaferro reflecting on these life lessons as they sit just feet away from all the excitement."To be able to sit right next to the water and to just cheer on these amazing athletes that we didn't really know a whole lot about, we're learning about a whole new sport today, which is really exciting," Taliaferro said.>> FOLLOW YOUR TEAMS: Sports coverage from 米兰体育 13Charity Borg and her husband are in the same boat. The Canoe Slalom and Kayak Cross Olympic Team Trials are underway in Alabama's capital city.

Charity Borg and her husband are in the same boat. They were excited to spend quality time with their family while learning more about Canoe Slalom.

"It's really awesome," Borg said. "Great to see the Olympic trials, definitely not something we've seen before."

Borg said her family loves water sports and wanted their young kids to see these top athletes.

The fun is just getting started, as competition continues Sunday.

Just like Saturday, the trials are free to watch.
