Road crews in Ohio are using vodka to melt ice on roads during an especially snowy winter.After several days of severe weather, Springfield Township’s Public Works Department was faced with the daunting task of keeping streets safe for drivers.To de-ice the pavement, workers use Ice B’Gone Magic, which is made from a byproduct of the distilled liquor.Vodka is comprised of mostly ethanol and water and has a freezing point of about -16.51°F. The substance is mixed with rock salt, a potent ice-melting product.Ice B’Gone Magic is safe for concrete, non-corrosive and doesn’t harm grass or plants. It can melt ice at more than 35 degrees below zero.The compound helps truck operators cut down on the amount of salt used to de-ice roads during the winter.
