When Doctor Donald Holslave's old old typewriter in the basement of the Milwaukee Public Museum, it's not out of frustration, you see, this isn't your typical office situation. likes his typewriter, in fact, all 800 of them. This is said to be the most extensive collection of typewriter history in the world, perhaps not in numbers, but at least in variety. And not surprisingly, as the typewriter, the first successful typewriter, that is, was invented here in Milwaukee during the late 1800s, but Hope does more than just dust off his collection. He's constantly trying to. Many of his museum colleagues can be found digging for fossils in some far off place, the typewriter Do spends *** lot of his time at antique shows and typewriter store basements. The South Side business was one of his latest research fields, and it's knowing what's the junk and what's not the junk that really makes the difference. And you have to be prepared going in, you have to know what you're looking for and be able to recognize it, you know, just plow through the junk, uh, looking for things that were set aside many years ago and not badly cannibalized and so forth, uh, and hoping to find. The unusual things, uh, in *** collection our size and our strength, we have an awful lot of the usual and so we're really interested in in more or less the unusual things that might have slipped by. And as luck would have it, another unusual typewriter apparently did slip by. Doctor Hoke's collection now goes up to 801. Mark Sires Channel 12 Action News, Milwaukee.
