UK and others sanction 2 Israeli ministers for 'inciting violence against Palestinians'
We have been watching the video coming out of Gaza. Officials at the United Nations reacting to the chaos that broke out at an aid distribution site in Gaza run by *** US-backed group on Tuesday. And frankly these video, these images are heartbreaking to say the least. Thousands of desperate Palestinians rushed to receive food supplies. Crowds tore down some of the and appeared to climb over barriers. Israeli troops fired warning shots into the air, and the US contractors overseeing the site briefly withdrew. The aid distribution came up at *** Tuesday State Department briefing. The real story here, the story is that aid and food is moving into Gaza at *** massive scale at this point when you're looking at 8000 food boxes. The distribution site is run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. Its aid plan has drawn criticism from the United Nations. The GHF acknowledged Tuesday's incident, but State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce appeared to sidestep the issue. I'm not, I'm not going to address either gossip or complaints or people who knew or weren't included or would do it *** different way or who's shooting at whom. I'm Reed Binion reporting.

The decision by Western governments friendly to Israel was a sharp rebuke of Israel鈥檚 settlement policies in the West Bank and of settler violence, which has spiked since Hamas鈥 Oct. 7, 2023, attack ignited the war in the Gaza Strip.

The five countries鈥 foreign ministers said in a joint statement that Ben-Gvir and Smotrich 鈥渉ave incited extremist violence and serious abuses of Palestinian human rights. Extremist rhetoric advocating the forced displacement of Palestinians and the creation of new Israeli settlements is appalling and dangerous.鈥

Israel's Foreign Ministry said earlier it had been informed of the sanctions.

Smotrich, the country鈥檚 finance minister, wrote on social media that he found out that Britain had decided to sanction him for obstructing the viability of a Palestinian state. 鈥淲e are determined to continue building,鈥 he said.

鈥淲e overcame Pharoah, we鈥檒l overcome Starmer鈥檚 Wall.鈥 Ben-Gvir, the national security minister, wrote on social media.

Israel鈥檚 Foreign Minister Gideon Saar called the move 鈥渙utrageous.鈥 He said he had discussed it with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and they would meet next week to discuss Israel's response.

The Biden administration took the rare step of sanctioning radical Israeli settlers implicated in violence in the occupied West Bank 鈥 sanctions that were then lifted by President Donald Trump.

Eitay Mack, an Israeli human rights lawyer who spent years campaigning for the sanctions on Smotrich and Ben-Gvir 鈥 along with violent West Bank settlers 鈥 described the move as 鈥渉istoric.鈥

鈥淚t means the wall of immunity that Israeli politicians had has been broken," he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 unbelievable that it took so long for Western governments to sanction Israeli politicians, and the fact that it's being done while Trump is president is quite amazing,鈥 said Mack. "It is a message to Netanyahu himself that he could be next."

Israel captured the West Bank along with east Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip in the 1967 Mideast war. The Palestinians want those territories for their hoped-for future state.

Settlement growth and construction have been promoted by successive Israeli governments stretching back decades, but it has exploded under Netanyahu鈥檚 far-right coalition, which has settlers in key Cabinet posts. There are now well over 100 settlements and 500,000 Israeli settlers sprawling across the territory from north to south 鈥 a reality, rights groups say, dimming any hopes for an eventual two-state solution.
