Esquire editors swear by these wireless headphone options when working out

Big lifts, long runs, endless hours of tunes.

Nothing feels better than hitting a PR with your favorite album blasting.

And while your regular wireless headphones will work in a pinch, most people will benefit from a pair of workout headphones.

And what makes a pair of headphones workout headphones, you ask? The ability to get loud (big bass helps), water resistance, and good battery life. A lot of people prefer noise cancelling, but if you are a road runner or marathon trainee, you should skip it.

Other than that it's simple. Snag a pair of these workout-ready headphones, throw on your jams, and run towards the grind.

The Best Workout Earbuds

Fit Pro

amazon.com
$199.95

Beats Fit Pro are a beacon of fitness technology innovation. The noise-cancelling buds are designed to stay put and and sound clear as you move. They do this with the help of dynamic head-tracking technology and flexible wingtips that bend to sit neatly inside of your ear.

When it comes to stability (aka not falling out) and comfort, these Beats beat the competition every time. Plus, they just look cool.

Best Budget Workout Headphones

Go Air Sport

amazon.com
$28.99

For under $50, we're not gonna find much wrong with a pair of headphones. Sure these from JLab won't sound like a pair of Beats or look as good as a pair of AirPods. But neither of those brands will commit to putting out a budget product as good as these. So for that, we salute JLab.

Plus, with eight hours of battery life, and a full 24 hours worth of battery if you have the case, these earbuds are in it for the long haul. Sure, there's no noise cancelling, but the ear loop keeps the locked down so you won't have to worry about paying $30 for a replacement pair.

3
Safest Running or Cycling Headphones

OpenRun Pro

amazon.com
$179.95
$159.95

Listen, I hate finger wagging more than anyone else, but road runners shouldn't be using noise cancelling headphones. Cyclists should prioritize safety over sound.

In terms of open ear headphones, nobody does it like SHOKZ. The OpenRun Pro deliver your music via bone vibrations. You hear your music, but your ear is also open the sounds of the world... It's weird sci-fi stuff. They're as stable a fit as you'll find, with incredible battery life and weather resistance.

All that said, these do not sound great. In fact, you might say they sound bad. That's kind of part of the deal. You get bass nice and strong through your ear bones, but the highs can get lost on a noisy city street. The experience is more like walking around with a bluetooth speaker near your head. It's strange, but ultimately it'll keep you safe.

Best Swimming Headphones

OpenSwim

amazon.com
$149.95

How about a brand double feature? No, I'm not paid by SHOKZ, but the brand does have the best for swimming in addition to it's OpenRun line. And who else is making headphones exclusively for swimmers?

Here's the catch. They aren't quite headphones. These work like an old-school music player, so you have to load them up with music beforehand. But, once you're in the water, that through-your-skull-bone-vibration stuff works way better than any water-rated earbud. And, since they're an MP3 player, no phone is required. If you're training for a triathlon, dive into the ocean and swim to your heart's content.

5
For the Heavy Lifter

Studio Pro

amazon.com
$349.99
$169.95

The newest release from Beats, the Studio Pro headphones, are some of the you can get. Because your ear is completely covered, the headphones' noise-cancelling capabilities shine through鈥攜ou cannot hear anything besides your music. A lot of heavy lifters prefer this kind of set-up because it helps you get into and stay locked in the zone.

But where do these come up short? For anyone that's not lifting big or hitting the machines, really. If your workout incorporates any sort of movement鈥攂urpees, box jumps, running, etc.鈥攖hese aren't going to be incredibly comfy. If you love the sound of that, but also do some off day running, pair these with one of the earbud options on this list.

Best Workout Headphones

RPT-02 Sport On-Ear

adidasheadphones.co
$170.00

First things first, these headphones are powered fully by light. Solar light does the best job, but they also get a significant charge from man-made lights at home, office, or on the subway. In theory, you'll never have to actively charge them. But to do so, place them in direct sunlight. (Or use a USB-C cable.)

And noise cancelling is great for the gym鈥攜ou can focus on you, not the dude deadlifting 500. Out in the world? It can be a bit dangerous, especially for road runners or park trainers. Selective noise cancelling is one solution, but Adidas has a much simpler one: No noise cancelling.

In this case, we think of it as a plus. The headphones block out plenty of noise as is, and additional noise cancelling would border on dangerous. And with removable knitted ear cushions, these are the easiest option to keep clean too.

Best Outdoor Workout Headphones

RPT-02 SOL

adidas.com
$229.00

Last year, when we tried the headphones we loved them. First off, these headphones are powered fully by light. Solar light does the best job, but they also get a significant charge from man-made lights at home, office, or on the subway. In theory, you'll never have to actively charge them. If you do, there's a USB-C cable included.

These may lack the coveted ANC of most other headphones, but it's worth considering that a large swath of people either dislike noise-cancelling headphones or don't care. The Adidas solution is simple: No noise cancelling. In this case, we think of it as a plus. The headphones block out plenty of noise as is, and additional noise cancelling would border on dangerous鈥攅specially when you're out on runs after dark or before the sun comes up.

Most Durable Workout Earbuds

Elite 8 Active

amazon.com
$199.99
$139.00

These are earbuds you can take wherever you work out. Unless that place is underwater, but we already covered that. We've already called them the due to their amazing audio quality, quick-charging case, and buttons for when your fingers are too sweaty for touch controls.

What we didn't touch on there is just how durable these suckers are. With an IP68 rating and military-grade certification, nothing is going to get in your way of breaking a sweat鈥攔egardless of it you're working out inside or outdoors.

9
Best Headphones for Heavy Lifting

QuietComfort Ultra

amazon.com
$429.00
$379.00

These are some of the most popular of the past few years and the reason is all in the name. They keep the outside world safe, and keep you comfortable. When lifting or doing workouts with weights, you want to be able to maintain that concentration. You also don't want anything falling out your ears. That's why these over-ears from Bose are your best bet.

If you are ready to invest in a pair of headphones, these will carry you beyond the gym floor (or home gym) and into the rest of your life. As long as you take proper care of those ear cushions!

Best Budget Workout Headphones

T4506 True Wireless Headphones

amazon.com
$31.00

For under $50, we're not gonna find much wrong with a pair of headphones. Sure these from Philips won't sound like a pair of Bose or look as good as a pair of AirPods. But neither of those brands will commit to putting out a budget product as good as these. So for that, we salute Philips.

Plus, with six hours of battery life, and a full 24 hours worth of battery if you have the case, these Phillips headphones are in it for the long haul. The noise cancelling isn't half bad. And again... at $50 it's never too difficult to snag a replacement pair.

Best Outdoor Workout Earbuds

amazon.com

Other Notable Mentions

Beats Studio Pro (): These used to be on the list. They're still a pretty great pick if you want a pair of headphones for heavy lifting but don't care to spend the $400 on the Bose.

Apple AirPods 4 (): You still haven鈥檛 picked one? Fine, just get the AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation. They're brand new and everyone I talk to loves them.

What to Consider When Buying Workout Headphones

Well, obviously, we're looking at how well-suited these are for workouts, but how are we testing that? These are the criteria we considered:

Stability - This is big for earbuds, especially. How locked down are these things in your ears? If they're too small, moving around or falling out, no good. But an earbud that's too big will give you similar options. All the options here have multiple buds to fit your ear, and they are all rock solid when in there.

Durability - Really, we just need them to handle sweat and the occasional drizzle. That said, a lot of the options here are overbuilt with amazing water resistance. I actually forgot the Adidas RPT-02 SOL outside during a day-long downpour. They still work fine. That would be the case for most of these options.

Sound - Workout sound has different needs from sound. Here, you want the ability to get loud and stay clear. All these options do that, and funny enough, that makes them all good general headphones.

Noise Cancelling - Depending on your workout routine, you may or may not want your workout headphones to have ANC or active noise-cancellation. Running outside? Noise cancelling could be dangerous. Treadmill in a busy gym? Probably time for ANC. We've found picks with and without ANC just to give you options.

Cleaning - For earbuds, you don't have to worry as much, but workout headphones can get a bit nasty. Especially those ear cushions. We only awarded models that required nothing more than a wipe down every week or two.

How We Test Headphones

The Esquire testing process is thorough and realistic. Our process for headphones requires using each one to ensure the battery life, durability, fit, and connection are all as advertised. For something like this, it also means getting on the elliptical and sweating in them. We know that鈥檚 gross but we do it for the Esquire audience. Our readers value comfort and form factor as much as audio quality, so we chose headphones that sound great but also look and feel amazing.
