Today marks 17 years since Mountain Brook High School graduate Natalee Holloway disappeared during a senior trip to Aruba in 2005. Learn more in the video above.The 18-year-old Holloway was last seen at a club the night before her group was scheduled to return home to Alabama. She never showed up for her flight home on May 30, 2005, prompting a massive, intensive search that quickly became international news. Hundreds of volunteers, special agents with the FBI and Dutch military members assisted Aruban investigators in the search operation. Holloway was never found and she was declared legally dead in 2012. This year she would have celebrated her 36th birthday.A former suspect in the case, Joran van der Sloot, is currently serving a 28-year sentence for the murder of Stephany Flores in Peru. At the end of his prison sentence in 2038, Van der Sloot will be extradited to the United States to face extortion and wire fraud charges in connection with the Holloway case.Holloway's mother, Beth, went on to become an advocate for personal safety and founded a non-profit organization designed "to inform and educate the public to help them travel more safely as they travel internationally." In 2018, Holloway's mother filed a lawsuit over a TV series about her daughter's disappearance.��
