STEWART: A HEART-WARMING STORY FOR YOUR FRIDAY. A RETIRED NURSE SAVED A THREE-MONTH OLD INFANT DURING FLIGHT FROM PITTSBURGH TO ORLANDO INTERNATIONAL LAST NIGHT. SUMMER: WESH鈥橲 SCOTT HEIDLER SAT DOWN WITH HER IN BREVARD COUNTY AND HAS HER AMAZING STORY. SCOTT: TAMARA PANZINO WAS ALREADY IN VACATION-MODE 35 MINUTES INTO HER SPIRIT AIRLINES FLIGHT THURSDAY NIGHT FROM PITTSBURGH TO ORLANDO. TAMARA: I WAS READING MY BOOK, NOT PAYING ATTENTION, HAD MY EAR BUDS IN. AND I HEARD A FLIGHT ATTENDANT SAY, "WE HAVE AN INFANT NOT BREATHING." SCOTT: SOON AFTER, AN ANNOUNCEMENT CAME OVER THE PA, "IS THERE A DOCTOR ONBOARD?" TAMARA GOT UP AND RAN TO THE BACK OF THE PLANE. TAMARA: I HAD NO IDEA WHETHER THE BABY WAS CHOKING. I DID NOT KNOW WHAT I WAS DEALING WITH. I SAW AN INFANT THE HEAD WAS BACK, BLUE LIPS SKIN TURNING BLUE. MY HEART DROPPED. SCOTT: EVEN THOUGH SHE IS A RETIRED RN, THE YEARS OF EXPERIENCE KICKED IN. A ROUND OF QUESTIONS REVEALED THAT THE INFANT WAS NOT DOING ANYTHING WHEN SHE STOPPED BREATHING. TAMARA: GAVE DADDY THE BABY, HELD IT WHILE I DID A STERNAL RUB, KIND OF AN AGGRESSIVE SHAKE OF THE CHEST. GET THE BABY TO, PINCHING IT. SCOTT: THEY WERE MOVING TO THE FRONT OF THE AIRPLANE WHEN. >> THE COLOR STARTED LOOKING BETTER. I WAS SO GLAD AND KEPT SHAKING IT AGGRESSIVELY. SCOTT: SHE DID NOT HAVE TO PERFORM CPR CALLS IT A TEAM , EFFORT. >> THEY HAD EVERYTHING WE NEEDED ONBOARD AND WITHIN A COUPLE MINUTES THE BABY WAS, WE WERE HOME FREE, THE BABY WAS GOOD. THE COLOR CAME BACK. I HEARD BREATHING SOUNDS. SCOTT: WHAT WAS THAT FEELING? >> OH MY GOSH, TOTAL RELIEF. SCOTT: SHE PUSHES BACK ON BEING CALLED A HERO. >> IT IS A COMMUNITY COMING TOGETHER. EVERYONE VOLUNTEERING TO DO WHAT THEIR KNOWLEDGE CAN HELP THEM DO. AND I AM GLAD I WAS THERE. A retired nurse saved a 3-month-old infant who stopped breathing during a flight on Thursday night from Pittsburgh to Orlando.The nurse sat down with sister station WESH and told her amazing story. Tamara Panzino was already in vacation mode 35 minutes into her Spirit Airlines flight.鈥淚 was reading my book, not paying attention and had my earbuds in. And I heard a flight attendant say, 鈥榳e have an infant not breathing,鈥欌� Panzino said.Soon after, an announcement came over the speaker, 鈥淚s there a doctor onboard?鈥漃anzino said she got up and ran to the back of the plane.鈥淚 had no idea whether the baby was choking, if the airway was clear,鈥� Panzino said. 鈥淚 did not know what I was dealing with. Saw an infant. The head was back. Blue lips and her skin turning blue. Clearly in distress. Not breathing. And my heart just dropped.鈥滶ven though Panzino is a retired nurse, her years of experience kicked in. A round of questions revealed that the infant was just lying still when she stopped breathing.鈥淕ave daddy the baby. He held it while I did a sternal rub, kind of an aggressive shake of the chest. Get the baby to react by pinching it. Trying to make it cry or take a deep breath,鈥� Panzino said.They moved to the front of the plane. 鈥淭he baby鈥檚 color started looking better. I was so glad and kept shaking it aggressively,鈥� Panzino said.Panzino did not have to perform CPR and called the response a team effort.鈥淪pirit had everything we needed right onboard, and before we knew, within a few minutes, the baby was home free. The baby was going to be good. The color came back. I heard breathing sounds. I heard (a) heartbeat. Oh, my gosh, total relief," she said.Panzino pushes back on being called a hero. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not a hero thing. It鈥檚 a community coming together and everyone volunteering to help with what their knowledge can do. I鈥檓 glad I was there,鈥� Panzino said.
