Rep. Terri Sewell says UAB could lose tens of millions in NIH funding
U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) stood outside of the UAB sign on University Boulevard to speak against what she calls the leaked, nearly finished republican budget.
Sewell says it has major cuts to the National Institute of Health.
President Donald Trump and his administration have warned of significant cuts to the federal workforce and funding.
According to Sewell, NIH will be reduced from 27 institutes and centers to eight. UAB was the top one percent of NIH-funded institutes last year, receiving $402 million.
Sewell called cuts to NIH funding devastating, which could negatively affect biomedical research.
At UAB, some of that research for causes and cures on issues like stroke, heart disease, diabetes.
"President Trump's cuts will cost UAB approximately $70 million a year. Behind all of those dollars are jobs, livelihoods, and potential medical breakthroughs that could save lives," Sewell said.
