'This is a solvable problem': Birmingham mayor passionately calls for need to end violence after mass shooting
As chief of stated um last night, what happened in our community was extremely unfortunate and the 2200 block of Magnolia Avenue, I think there are many things we can do. The first thing and the priority is to get these shooters find these shooters and get them off our streets. Um That will require the assistance of community members, not just from last night but anyone who have any information related to um the whereabouts of the shooters. Um I think it's critic critically important um for us to be in *** position to best solve this case for community members to step forward. I want to stress that you can remain anonymous and call crime stoppers at 2052547777. Again, that phone number is 205 2547777. If you have any information, please reach out to crime stoppers. I also want to acknowledge uh the the toll of this, the heavy heaviness of this. Um For many, many people involved, one for these victims of the victims who lived um and who have to wake up and face *** new unfortunate normal related to the emotional as well as physical trauma um that they will have to live with to, to those who actually lost their lives to their families. There are no words um for that loss, right? Trying to stand here and find words to describe um those families and what they're feeling right now, the anger, the hurt, the pain, the loss. I will say this, we all of us as *** community owe it to them to do everything we can to take these shooters killers off our streets. I also wanna echo sentiments of what Chief Thurmond said and that is *** huge thank you. First of all, first responders, um my officers in our fire department E ma, et cetera. Um what they saw last night, what they wake up facing uh that's an emotional toll on them as well. But I wanna give *** huge shout out to UAB Hospital, Saint Vincent's Hospital, Brookwood Hospital and Princeton Hospital for doing what they do best and that is saving lives. All of those hospitals stepped up last night for those surviving victims. But I wanna make something clear. I am *** an elected official. My position is nonpartisan and so in this moment, pretty much like all moments, I really don't care. I don't give *** damn about partisan. I don't care about Democrat, democratic politics, republican politics, what I care about and what is my concern? What is my top priority along with the Burman Police Department is public safety, but you gotta give us the tools to solve these issues. This is not the first occasion. Unfortunately, in 2024 where we've seen the style of weapons, the number of bullets on the scene possibly converted Jews et cetera. Um, automatic weapons being used in our streets. This is *** solvable problem. And I wanna explain that, you know, I tell people when America gets *** cold, Um It's possible that Birmingham gets the flu. We've seen this um in the sixties and during segregation at the height of it, unfortunately, we were the poster child. We find ourselves in 2024 where gun violence is at an epidemic level and the epidemic crisis in our country. And unfortunately, the city of Birmingham finds itself unfortunately, at the tip of that sphere. Is it solvable? The answer is yes. Does it require everyone to come together? The answer is also yes. At the height of gun violence in our country, which was the nineties, there was *** bill that was passed. Now, some will say I'm getting too political, but I am *** politician so I need to speak the truth and publicly share my thoughts and what I'm feeling so people can understand what's at stake. Here. There was an assault weapons ban passed our country and not just our country but the city of Birmingham in that 10 year window saw the lowest lowest form of gun violence since that assault assault weapons ban has been lifted. *** lot of things have changed, not just the increase of homicides at *** scale in the city of Birmingham, but the style of weapons used in our city conversion views, switches, et cetera. The number of showcasing on *** given scene that requires laws to be changed, to give the necessary tools for police to enforce. That is my desire, that is our desire, our desire, our priority is to take killers and shooters off the streets. We don't have any interest in this whole debate about second amendment rights. We don't have any interest in people who want to protect their homes, militia, whatever else you want to say, there's *** certain element in this city, there's *** certain element in this community who are too comfortable riding around semiautomatic weapons, automatic weapons conversion switches and everything else who's only *** t hell bent intent is to harm people, shoot people kill people. They don't care if it's innocent people around. They don't care if it's *** business, *** home, *** senior, *** child that is their interest. We need the necessary tools. We don't have home rule. And so I wanna work with the state. I wanna work with the state to solve this problem. Not here to point fingers but at *** epidemic level that it is right now, can we make an exception for the city of Birmingham and allow the necessary resources? Allow the necessary tools allow the necessary laws to address this because this is not the first quadruple homicide we've had in 2024 but the same set of circumstances exist with the style of weapon, the number of bullets, the conversions, et cetera. This is solvable. We owe it to the victims. We owe to the victims' families. We owe to the victims who are no longer with us. We owe to the victims who have to live with this trauma. We owe it to our innocent Children, our innocent seniors, we owe it to every citizen in Birmingham. We owe it to small business owners and community members. We owe it to everyone. You know, clock switches, conversions are federally outlawed and while they're outlaw with my left hand, you also have Congress not giving *** TF the actual organization designed to enforce and take him off the street. You're cutting their resources at the federal level. You have to give people the tools they need to address and solve this issue. You see, we are prepared to be overly aggressive, dogmatic if you will and go after every shooter in the city. But as it stands, they can ride around, no permit, they can ride around with any type of gun again if you want to protect your home. Cool. What are you gonna do for us? The people who you say are responsible for public safety. You take this hand and you put it behind our back. You take this hand and you put it behind our back. No worries. I got it, bro. You take this hand, you put it behind our back, then you put *** blindfold over our eyes and tell us, well, you're responsible for solving this issue. So yeah, there are *** lot of emotions that I have but they pale in comparison to the family members who are waking up to their loved one, not being beside them this morning, pale. My emotions pale in comparison to the victims who are still at these hospitals. I name we have to figure out what's next in life. We have to live with this trauma. Do not tell me this is not solvable and at the same time, do not tell me this is only on the police assault, elected officials locally, statewide and nationally have *** duty to solve this American crisis. This American epidemic of gun violence, we should not allow people to just ride around with any style type of weapon that doesn't even belong on domestic streets. It should not be allowable. Period. I don't care what your politics are so said *** lot probably said too much if you're offended by it, I don't care. We have *** job to do. We want to get these shooters and killers off the street. And if you have information, it is incumbent upon you to call 2052547777 and give that information to us. You can remain anonymous. We continue to provide every resource available to these victims and their families and our office will continue to lend every resource we can. We wanna thank our federal partners *** TF and FBI for being here with us standing in the gaps, assisting with this.

He became passionate, and said that while he was getting political, he is a politician and needs to speak the truth.

Woodfin said that they are ready to go and get every shooter in the city, but people don't need permits and the ATF isn't being funded to help get Glock switches off the streets, so their hands are behind their backs.
