SUSPECT IN MASS SHOOTINGS ARRESTED FOR MURDER OF FIREFIGHTER | JORDAN MELTON'S MOTHER REMEMBERS HIM | TIMELINE OF SHOOTINGS POLICE CONNECT TO MCDANIEL
Nineteen months ago, tragedy struck at Fire Station Nine in Birmingham. Two firefighters were shot while at work, and one of them died from his injuries.
鈥淭his is something we've been waiting for 594 days to get that call it provides closure for Jordan's family, Jamal's family and the rest of our department. Today is a good day for us,鈥 Fire Chief Cory Moon said.
Birmingham police announced Damien McDaniel is responsible for killing firefighter Jordan Melton and injuring Sgt. Jamal Jones on Tuesday.
"I did have faith that we would eventually get to this day. It's just been painful to wait and watch it all evolve,鈥 Moon said.

Since that day, Moon said they expanded their safety plan at all fire stations adding more cameras.
鈥淲e added door access control," Moon said. "We updated our, station security policy."
He said some of the first responders left their posts at Fire Station Nine -- saying they just couldn't fathom coming back here.
鈥淭his isn't something that you expect to deal with, so it was painful for them. We're literally a family at Birmingham Fire Rescue Service. So, it's like watching a family member go through something that you have no control over. And it affected us all.鈥
The effect goes beyond the Birmingham Fire Department there are more families who are processing this. Birmingham police say McDaniel killed 14 people now, adding Melton, and two others: Mia Nickson and Anthony Love Jr. to the list.
鈥淚t'll never replace the lives that were lost. But at least the families, I hope they get some form of closure, from knowing that this person has been brought to justice."
米兰体育 13 did get a statement from McDaniel鈥檚 lawyer, John Robbins. In it, he said the team was not surprised by the additional charges announced today.
鈥We were aware that there was further investigations going on that were separate from the pending cases. So, we are not too surprised by the additional charges. The defense team will not be deterred from providing our client with a vigorous defense that our system of justice demands. The defense team understands and appreciates the pain and suffering that the family and friends of all the victims have experienced and will continue to experience as these cases play out in court. We are not blind to that aspect of any homicide case. We will conduct the defense in a professional and ethical manner, but the whole team will do their best to provide our client with effective representation As lead counsel, I hope that everyone in the community who follows these cases will remember that Damien has not been convicted of any killing or shooting; that not one shred of evidence has been presented in court to support these charges; and that Damien stands before the court presumed to be innocent. Let鈥檚 keep that in mind as we go forward."
Moon said he called Sgt. Jamal Jones to give him an update and he was happy to hear charges have been filed. Jones, is doing well, Moon said he still has some recovery to go through.
